Greg Ip in the WSJ says president Biden's popularity has not surged because of lack of results in the fight against inflation. Yet inflation has been cut in half as reported in the WSJ recently, with May inflation of 4% in the US being about half of what it was at its peak of 9% in 2022.  Inflation is much worse in Europe. Biden policies that helped fight inflation included the Inflation Reduction Act to control health costs, the policies to keep Russian oil below a certain level that reduced oil prices to $75 a barrel, and the sequential interest rate increases by Jerome Powell at the Fed. The long term benefits of increased investment in manufacturing in the US for jobs growth, and competitive policy to gain US leadership in many technologies also provide for sound growth in the long term.

With unemployment at 11% and inflation at 9%, public finances in Rio de Janeiro state dire to the point of delaying payments to public servants, including police and teachers, and corruption scandals affecting most politicians and parties, the mood in Brazil at the time of the Olympics is one of anger and indifference. Ordinary Brazilians feel that the $12 billion spent on the Olympics could have been better spent on education, health care and improving basic public services such as the bus system. The decision to host the Olympics was made by the Lula government at the height of the commodities boom. With the collapse of commodities prices and the debt run up by the federal and local government Brazil faces a contracting economy- a 3.8% drop in GDP in 2015- and rising unemployment, increasing inflation, the climate is very different in 2016.

This unbelievable story from Berlin, Germany, where dozens of police officers are injured and three hospitalized trying to disperse 20,000 people gathered to protest anti-pandemic measures. 130 people had to be arrested. 1100 officers had to be deployed to monitor the gathering even though there is a spike in cases in Germany. The gathering was done with people not wearing masks and not social distancing. Berlin mayor Michael Muller said they risked the health of other people. The gathering was a mixture of hard left and hard right supporters in a strange mix with shouting "we are the second wave" as the protest reached the Brandenburg Gate. Police had to use loudspeakers to get people to leave the area. And launched legal action for "non-respect of hygiene rules." Some officers were hit by shards of glass.

Craig Smith, the head of Surgery at Columbia University's hospital in New York, and Craig Smith the writer using language that provides solace to many people at a difficult time. He is also poetic at times quoting from John Wooden, as well as Emily Dickinson. He is in the middle of this public health crisis that is New York City today. When he gave the presidential address to the American Association for Thoracic Surgery he opened and closed his lecture with meditations on a Yeats poem. Here he is as a human talking to humans caught in a most perplexing time for medicine.

He quotes Emily Dickinson in one note saying-

"Not opening when the dawn will come/ I open every door." Doors are opening all over the place.

Irresponsible talk of former officials of the previous administrations, that engages in speculation about China's motives and it's interests in Iran.
Russian interests are to be respected as a part of western civilization as a part of evolving modern Northern Europe since 1400, and in the 20th century since the development of nuclear weapons a technological world power that sees its first responsibility to prevent nuclear proliferation and maintain the health of the planet. China's interests as a world power are also first and foremost about its responsibilities for nuclear non proliferation, responsibilities it shares with the US and Russia. China and India also see western civilization as a role model with the Renaissance, the Enlightenment, and the scientific and industrial revolutions, and wish to embrace them for their entry into the Modern World.

Karl Rove says he was in his 20's working in the Reagan election campaign in Texas which was declared a close contest by the New York Times polls. Gallup in October showed Carter ahead Oct 13 by 4 points, and by Oct 27 by 8 points. He expresses skepticism about current polls because of 91 national polls in the last 30 days (including Gallup and Rasmussen) Obama was at or above what he calls the critical or magic number of 50% in only 20 polls.

Closing the plant at Genk in Belgium cost Ford an estimated $750 million and years of difficulty with workers and the community. The plant employs 4300 workers and the cost comes to about $190,000 per worker. Many auto plants in Europe are operating at about 60% of capacity in 2013, and about 7-8 million units of car and light truck capacity remains idle, by some estimates. Ford was compelled to take this action because of billions of dollars of losses for Ford Europe as sales declined because of the eurozone financial crisis and austerity measures.

Bob Herbert calls Obama's attention to afew simple facts- the jobless rate for men 16 years and over is 11.4%, for blacks 15.7%. About 35% of black children live in poverty and the number could soon reach 50%. Hepoints to the mood of the country where a crowd cheering Yankee win in Manhattan erupted to rhythmic chants of "Wall Street sucks." And he reminds us that the full extent of the carnage and costs of the twin wars has been kept hidden from the public. Visit one of the military medical centers and one sees the costs. And he cites Pennsylvania governor Ed Rendell saying in an interview that the people in the Pennsylvania National Guard have been in the wars two, three or four times, and are worn out. Where are we going to find more troops, he asks.

Swiss bank UBS plans to make 10,000 job cuts in the next 3-5 years. Most of the job cuts will come at the investment banking operations which has 16,432 employees. Carsten Kengeter will be made chief of investment banking to concentrate on the downsizing effort. Andrea Orcel, who was brought in by new CEO Sergio Ermotti to be co-head of investment banking will run the remaining businesses of advising on mergers and equity underwriting. Trading businesses, especially fixed income, will be closed down. A third of the employees and 15 lines of business in the investment banking operation will be cut. The strategy is focus on businesses that do not require much capital to run and to build on its competitive advantages. This means focussing on its strong points in wealth management operations and the asset management division, which combined have $2 trillion under management. This move away from capital intensive business is part of an effort by Mr. Ermotti to dispel notions that UBS is not adequately capitalized. UBS suffered losses of $50 billion during the early part of the 2008 financial crisis, followed by the rogue bets by a trader in the London office leading to a loss of $2 billion in 2012. Following the most recent losses Sergio Ermotti was hired to replace Oswald Grubel in 2012. UBS now provides an example for other banks to overhaul their banking operations and downscale the importance and risks of investment banking....
