Economists expect the Japanese economy to grow by 1% for the full year 2008. The 2nd quarter has actually seen a contraction in the GDP with most economists forecasting a drop at an annualized rate of 2-3%. The causes are largely external so no poicy changes are expected. The rise in food and fuel prices and the increase in raw materials prices has led to higher inflation and consumers spending less, companies investing less in new plant and equipment. Next general elections are in September 2009. Prime Minister Fukuda, 72, has seen his approval ratings drop to 20-30%, and he is seen as lacking a clear vision for Japan. This is the worst downturn since 2002 when it was clearing up bad debt in its banking system.

The opposition in China and South Korea to Japan's release of slightly radioactive water into the sea stems from a distrust of Japanese data that supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency says the discharge does not affect public health. By next March 2% of the accumulated water will be released. In all 1.2 million tons are planned to be released over 30 years starting August 24, 2023. That water contains small quantities of radioactive tritium which Japan says is less than what Chinese nuclear plants release into the sea. TEPCO which manages the Fukushima plant decommissioning says it will post the data on release and level of radioactive material on its website with comparison to the levels seen as not affecting health that WHO has set.

US census data shows Mexico exported $382 billion worth of goods to the US in 2022, an increase of 20% over 2021, according to US census data. American companies put more money into Mexico for investment than China in 2021. The high shipping costs and 2 weeks vs 2 months of shipping time are part of the reason companies are looking at Mexico as an alternative to China. The trade friction with the US and tariffs are added incentives for companies to shift manufacturing out of China. The shift is gradual as the infrastructure improvements in Mexico lag behind the infrastructure development in other countries in Asia.

Elle Hunt in The Guardian provides this timely reminder of what distraction is doing in modern life shortening attention spans and affecting concentration. The US dollar is only 5% way from reaching parity with the euro. The euro was at $1.03 during the beginning of May. It is at $1.05 on May 21. With the US central bank raising rates, and the effects of energy shortages on the European economy, parity looks likely says this report in WSJ. Additionally weakening demand from China for European goods or the EU shifting its supply chains back to home countries and trading less with China could also have an impact from the ripple effects of China's support for the Russian position on Ukraine.

Saudi Arabia's efforts to push oil prices higher have fallen flat with deep discounted oil sales by Russia to China. Russia has overtaken the Saudis as the largest supplier of oil to China. Saudi supplies to China have fallen to 14% of imports, while Russia's supplies to China have increased to 14%. China is building up inventory as a reserve capacity. Saudis cut production last month to push prices higher but prices haven't budged and stayed at about $75 a barrel. Russia is discounting by $26 a barrel and offsets the extra $6 it costs to ship Russian oil.
