Venezuela's economy declined by 2.8% in 2014, according to the government. In 2015 the GDP decline is forecast at 7% by the IMF. Venezuela is finally confronting the serious problems it faces by giving gasoline at the pump at pennies a gallon. The huge subsidy leading to waste and smuggling in the border regions with Columbia was wasteful at crude oil prices of $100 a gallon, and is now a burden on the economy at crude oil prices of $50 a gallon in Jan. 2015. In his annual address at the National Assembly president Maduro confronted this by saying- "It's a distortion, you have to admit it, you can crucify me if you want but there's a need for us to go to a balanced price." On devaluation of the currency, the Bolivar, he said a state run operation that sells U.S. dollars at the rate of 50 Bolivares per dollar would now be run by private brokers. As this is the lowest of a three tier exchange rate run by the government for all foreign exchange transactions it effectively would be a devaluation of the currency. It would help the government meet its budget deficit by bringing in more local currency, which private economists estimate at 14% of GDP. At the same time it would worsen already high inflation of about 64%....

Same store sales continued to drop for the fifth consecutive quarter for Best Buy electronics retail stores. Best Buy shares have declined by 32% as of September 14, 2011. Best Buy has 1,100 stores in the U.S. and competes with online retailer Amazon for electronics sales. Investors see Best Buy management's plans to reduce square footage by 10% as too slow a response to a developing crisis for big store sales. Best Buy CEO, Brian Dunn, says about 40% of online purchases from Best Buy are picked up at its stores. He sees a role for retailers with physical store space because, as he sees it, customers still want to see, touch and feel the latest tablet or other electronic gadget. Critics say customers are prone to use the stores to look at products, and make the actual purchases online at Amazon, where no sales tax is paid.

After decade and half of Conservative Cameron austerity Labour needed time to wrestle with the issues of levelling facing Britain's north and the Midlands. Instead Labour found itself on the backfoot and Farage was brought out of retirement after issues in towns like Epping and all across England, where migrants were put in hotels as women and locals loudly disapproved. Labour thought under Conservatives  that over 50,000 were in asylum hotels in 2023 and this has come down to 35,000 in 2025 under Labour, as a kind of improvement not realizing that the public mood questioned the whole idea of the migrants in hotels itself, of little tolerance for any illegal migrants in neighborhoods itself. It shows the political processes have great importance and a series of mediocre leaders from Blair, Brown, Cameron, Johnson, Sunak, Starmer and Farage over a period of 4 decades can change the trajectory for nations and region. A similar period for India in 1720-1760 with warring factions and regions inviting British East India Company troops to opposing sides fractured the country and led to losing its grip on itself. Gandhiji describes this for introspection in Hind Swaraj (1905) not taking the easy road most now discredited anticolonial writers after 1950 took in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Where does this leave Britain in 2026? It can only come to grips with it knowing that the quality of education, quality of leadership, honesty and introspection of the kind suggested by Teddy Roosevelt in Applied Idealism in his Autobiography, chapter 5, and in Gandhiji's Hind Swaraj are essential.  ...

Her Brothers of Italy party has links to 1930's Italy, which Meloni is attempting to transform into a modern version that speaks for mothers, the Catholics and Italy. Italy has seen 70 governments in a short period with a highly fragmented and changing political scene. The analysis in BBC says this government could last only as long as it retains the support of people as governments have changed so quickly in Italy. Her partners in her coalition Mr. Berlusconi and Mr. Salvini have also won and lost public opinion in different periods in the last decade.

Amtrak Biden says is an essential part of the fight to tackle climate change. Rail has 83% less greenhouse emissions than automobiles, and 73% less than plane air travel. It also has the potential to create half a million good jobs. President Biden was known as "Amtrak Joe" because he used Amtrak for decades as America's Senator from Delaware. In this video president Biden speaks at the 50th anniversary of Amtrak in Philadelphia. He says one of the conductors on his daily route estimated Biden has done 1.5 million miles on Amtrak compared to 1.1 million miles on Air Force One. Biden says he has traveled on Amtrak for as long as Amtrak has been in existence- for close to 50 years.

Law firms indirectly adding to the cost of doing business with outrageous per hour rates ($2500 per hour?), costs sure to be transferred to consumers and buyers in today's Cost of Living crisis. Another instance of price gouging in a different context that pushes up costs and prices, something Harris talked about in the debate.

There is a 30% jump in lawyer fees from $190,000 to $250,000, for junior associates since 2018. It is just not sustainable. Part of the problem is  hourly rates and companies such as Shell are looking for alternative arrangements- ones that make the final costs predictable and transparent.

Russian Finance Minister Kudrin laid out some of the policies of Russia's investment fund. Russia will put $31 billion in a national wealth fund which will be invested abroad. Of this 60% has to be invested in government bonds and the rest of 40% could be invested as portfolio investments in corporate stocks and bonds. Following the example of the Norwegian wealth fund no stakes will be taken in a company that exceed 5%. This is intended to allay fears of political influence in the western countries.

In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Mark Carney, the head of Canada's central bank and the head of the Financial Stability Board, says China is falling behind in its earlier committments made at G-20 meetings to move towards rebalancing the world economy. He pointed to the fact that consumption in China has moved from about half of China's GDP to about a third, in the last ten years. China's investment has also declined from half of GDP to about one third. Carney also raised concerns about the strength of the Canadian dollar for Canada's competitiveness. The report "China: 2030" by the World Bank and China's Development Reform Commission also calls for changes in the way China's economy has increased its dependence on state run companies.

Former president Lula da Silva of Brazil is sentenced to 10 years in prison on corruption charges. The charges are that Mr da Silva and his wife were illegally given about $1.1 million in improvements from a construction company for a beachfront apartment. The construction company was able to get lucrative contracts from the state oil company Petrobras. Many of Brazil's politicians are under investigation. The former speaker of the Brazil parliament, Eduardo Cunha, was sentenced to 15 years in jail for money laundering and corruption. The current president Mr. Temer is also under investigation. A culture where such activity was accepted had developed, and this effort started with a small investigation called "Operation Car Wash" in a smaller Brazilian city named Curitiba. Young lawyers determined to set a higher standard and fight Brazil corruption pursued the case that led upto the higher echelons of Brazilian government, the construction industry, and the state oil company Petrobras. ...

Not much in any meaningful way is being done so far for homeowners facing loss of their homes. The bailout plan has wording that encourages the government to help but no concrete measures beyond that. At this point loan modifications by banks are doing little meaningful to help homeowners. Some critical measures of what is happening. According to Sheila Barr of FDIC troubled loan portfolios have yielded about 32% of book value compared with 87% for loans in which the borrower is current, in her statement in Congress. But with fear gripping the credit markets the banks are reluctant to take any immediate losses by writing down principal balances unless the government steps in, because their capital is under huge strain and some banks are going under. Deutsche Bank estimates 40% of homeowners or about 20 million households will owe more than their home is worth by the time the housing market stabilizes. This suggests he scale of the problem as Martin Ferldstein pointed out in the WSJ someof these homeowners may simply walk away from their home as a rational decision. It also suggests how this combined with rising unemployment could lead to significant drops in consumption spending making the situation in the economy much worse, and allowing rising unemployment to play an additional role in increasing home foreclosures for the first time....

Warnings about the decline in reading comprehension in the US shown by 30 years of NAEP testing, all the way down the graphs show.  About 70 percent of American children in 4th grade cannot reach Reading Proficient level of the National Association of Education Performance Tests for 2024. The problem is the lack of rich content based education as standard in all American schools says E.D. Hirsch. It is also about getting children excited about reading, and giving them opportunities to use their imagination. This promotes lifelong learning the key to better reading. This way children seek out new books from libraries, from friends, mentors, from the internet and from online stores. Once this happens it takes place on its own. Interaction with adults adds another dimension to the reading. Lyrarc's Movement for Global Literacy is about rebuilding reading comprehension in the US. Epic Systems of Verona, Wisconsin, is one of the companies engaged in digitizing health records. It has helped develop records for 40 million patients in hospital systems such as Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, Kaiser Permanente, the Cleveland Clinic, and John Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore and the Weill Cornell Physicians Organization of New York. Epic provides the software, the IT systems, the training and support. Epic is one of the pioneers in this, having been in the business for 30 years. About 40% of primary care doctors in the U.S. and 25% of hospitals use electronic patient records. The Federal government has provided $2.7 billion in funding from $27 billion of Stimulus funds assigned for the purpose of conversion to electronic medical records. This is likely to speed up the conversion. Other providers are Cerner, Allscripts, Meditech, Siemens Healthcare, G.E. Healthcare, and IBM. Epic Systems is considered the defacto standard in the industry for medical schools and some of the major hospital systems in the country. New contracts are leading to a major expansion of Epic Systems which employs 5100 people. Epic plans to hire an additional 1000 people. Revenue for the privately owned company are estimated at $1.2 billion, a 45% increase over the prior year. Epic is expected to have 127 million patients under medical records by mid 2013. To get the feedback essential for such a large conversion, CEO Faulkner relies on feedback from 250,000 doctors who use the Epic systems software, and on nurses and doctors from Epic who visit customer's sites to see first hand how it works and what needs improvement. Judith Faulkner started Epic more than 30 years ago. A project for the Psychiatry department led to other projects after she graduated in computer science from the University of Wisconsin. Epic continues to attract programmers to Wisconsin by making the Epic campus a fun environment and a great place to work. ...

The opposition in China and South Korea to Japan's release of slightly radioactive water into the sea stems from a distrust of Japanese data that supported by the International Atomic Energy Agency says the discharge does not affect public health. By next March 2% of the accumulated water will be released. In all 1.2 million tons are planned to be released over 30 years starting August 24, 2023. That water contains small quantities of radioactive tritium which Japan says is less than what Chinese nuclear plants release into the sea. TEPCO which manages the Fukushima plant decommissioning says it will post the data on release and level of radioactive material on its website with comparison to the levels seen as not affecting health that WHO has set.

France lags behind Germany and other countries in competitiveness. France's share of European exports decreased from 15.6% in 2000 to 12.5% in the first 5 months of 2011, according to Coe-Rexecode, an economics consultancy firm. Germany has used the last decade to lower social spending and state spending, bring wage restraint, and making industry more productive. France has not experienced a similiar process. Competitiveness and growth is needed for France to improve public finances. After the rise in borrowing costs to Italy France's premium over Germany to borrow for 10 years went up to 71 basis points on July 13, it is now at 62 points. France's trade deficit is rising and was 7 billion euros in April and May, according to Societe Generale.

Concern that the interested party is driving the decision making process. Medicare costs went up by 9% in 2009. Fears that doctors have too much control over the dollars in the $500 billion Medicare program. The tendency to focus on more expensive procedures and short change preventive and less costly care. Medicare spends $60 billion on doctors fees. The older codes remain in place even when costs are reduced, leading to higher costs for the Medicare budget each year. And there is little incentive for doctors in RUC to revise overvalued codes.

A new CBS-New York Times opinion poll in June 2012 shows 44% of those polled approve the job the Supreme Court is performing and about three fourths say the decisions of justices of the court are influenced by their political and personal views. By comparison only 15% approve of the job done by the U.S. Congress in the most recent poll. Only one in eight say the justices make decisions based solely on legal analysis. About 60% say they agree that life tenure for justices is bad because it gives too much power to justices. On the health care law two thirds of those polled say they hope some or all of the 2010 Obama health care law is overturned.

Toyota is seeing declining sales and has cut its temporary workforce by more than 20% from 8,800 in March to 6,800 in September. Sales declined 4% in the July-September quarter. The whole area in Toyota city with 76,000 jobs connected to the auto industry and the area around Nagoya is being affected. And emerging markets are not making up for steep declines in the American market. Analysts at Credit Suisse and UBS predict Japan's economy could contract by 1% in 2009. Sales at major department stores in Nagoya dropped 8.7% in September, the largest decline among 10 major cities in Japan, and there is a fivefold increase in the number of distressed businesses seeking government loans according to a report by the local chamber of commerce.

About 25% of white Americans have interracial marraiges and nearly half of all black Americans belong to a multiracial family, according to estimates made by Joshua Goldstein of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research. What it does is wake one up to the reality, the changes that have already ocurred in the country which most people had not realized. With Blacks, Hispanics, Jewish people, Asian Americans, the 25% of whites in interracial marraiges, recent immigrants, white women, and white males making up this mosaic of cultures and communities that makeup America. And the geographical mix is also just as varied, with the west and the northwest and the midwest and east having a bigger share of this mosaic than the south and the mountain states. Whites in interracial marraiges tends to breakup the traditional white protestant insular demographic. On the religious side there is a breakup of the traditional white demographic with Irish Americans especially those in the east tending to move away from the traditional white protestant insular demographic because of their own particular historical and cultural narrative. The Obama story is one of tapping into these different demographics and changing faces of America at the right time, when the conservative southern demographic, represented by the Bush family, combined with related demographic groups in counties and neighborhoods around the country had lost popular support from two wars and a failing economy....

Consideration is a term being used in Detroit auto company marketing efforts, if a customer gives little consideration to a company or brand or if its not on his list of brands or companies to consider, then snap you are not even in the running. The customer does not even visit your dealer showrooms, and no matter how well you make your cars its not going to make a difference. It has to take a lot of neglect of customers for this sort of situation to arise, but its exactly the situation Detroits auto companies face. They are trying marketing ploys such as this one by Ford's advertising agency, but its impact is uncertain. The efforts at GM also focus on marketing but again efforts to put Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys in Saturn dealerships next to the Saturn Aura, for side by side test drives have not had much impact on Aura sales. So a similiar effort for the Chevrolet Malibu in Chevy dealerships has been scrapped. There is even skepticism that a lifetime warranty on engines and transmissions by Chrysler on its vehicles will have much impact, so large is the customer resistance and ingrained perception of American car manufacturers. Over time perceptions may change but it will take a while to convince the American customer who feels he was once treated with disdain, and who will give a good hard look at things before he changes his mind. The figures bear this out. Years of neglect of car buying public and focus on SUV's and trucks is showing up in a 51.3 % share of the market for the American Three companies down from 60% 4 years ago. So half the market has pretty much been conceded to the likes of Honda and Toyota. Actually in the West and East coasts the numbers probably range to 60% and 70% depending on the local area in these 2 regions. So that means more established dealerships for cars, years of marketing effort focussed on cars, sales contacts and so that may take years to dislodge to any degree. The figures behind consideration by JD Powers show that 54% of car buyers are import loyalists, a slightly higher figure than the 51.3% showing that the trend is even more defection to imports in the 1-3 years ahead. And 22% consider both domestic and import cars. With this segment there is more selection in the imports beause only now are the American Three carmakers building up their car model lineups, especially Ford, so this will be ahard fought segment with no certainty that the Detroit Three carmakers will come out on top given the lead and established networks of the carmakers like Toyota and Honda. Only 25% are domestic or American carmaker loyal. A lot may depend on the way a customer is treated from reading letters to the editor in the media by buyers of US and import cars. A car buyer treated with no respect and sincere concern for his needs and preferneces is likely to remember the treatment for a long time. Not just products but attitudes and people in sincerity will have to change....

The House healthcare bill that just passed by amargin of 220 to 215. The cost would be $1.055 trillion over 10 years, with cost of $894 billion factoring in penalties for individuals and businesses that don't buy insurance. Adding increased coverage for Medicare prescirption drug coverage for seniors its around $1.2 trillion. $460 billion is from new taxes on single people with income of over $500,000 or couples with inocme of $1 million. There are $400 billion in cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, and additional money coming from penalties for not buying insurance. First column here is Senate version, second for House version and third President's version. Other features individuals must have insurance or pay afee of 2.5% of income, hardhip waivers will be available. Employers must provide insurance to employees or pay a penalty of 8% of payroll. Small businesses with fewer than 10 workers get tax credits. The threshhold is $500,000 of payroll. To help families with lower incomes and the poor the bill provides: families earning $29,000 a year pay no more than 1.5% of income for premiums. Families with incomes of $88,000 ayear would pay no more than 12% of income for premiums. ...

Jason Zweig cites the St. Petersburg Paradox in questioning how much someone should pay for a bet on Facebook shares at the high valuation set for this inital public offering. This riddle asks how much would one pay for playing a game in which one gets $1 for winning the first toss of a coin and the game ends, or $2 if the coin comes up heads the second time, or $4 the next time, $8 next and keep doing this , the payment doubles each time. The point is that the payoff is infinite because at each toss the probability is 50% and 12.5% for the next toss, and one could get to the 30th toss or the 60th toss, with payoff in hundreds of millions. People also could be out of the game when the heads come up and not see the later supposed gains. Because of this experts say the most people should pay for playing is $20. The Facebook offering has infinite potential of this sort, but the reality is that for businesses of this type one can only see a couple of years ahead in terms of growth, with large uncertainties ahead about growth beyond that point. Charles Lee, professor of accounting at Stanford Business School, and former head of equity research at Barclays Global Investors, says its hard to see further than two or three years for this type of company. Another problem is pointed out by Prof. Ritter of the University of Florida. He says the valuation is so high today that even if Facebook followed Google's growth and had a total market value of $190 billon that Google has today in 10 years, the annual return would be around 6.8%....

Sony is introducing several tablets to cover the whole market. One is a 9.4 inch, 598 gram S -or slate- series which is aimed at the market for home use. The other is a light 372 gram P series- for portable- which strives to reach users who carry the tablet around. An S model with 16 gigabytes is sold at 45,000 yen and a 32 gigabyte version at 53,000 yen. It will be sold through NTT DoCoMo in Japan. Sony corporate vice president, Akihiro Matsubara, says Sony has set the goal of becoming number one in market share in Japan for Android tablets by 2012. Sony's estimate of the market for tablets in Japan is for 3.2 million tablets sold in Japan in 2012, which is 60% higher than in 2011.
