The U.S. Congressional Budget Office (CBO) revised estimates in May 2013 show the U.S. debt to GDP ratio in 2013 at about 75.1%, coming down slightly in the next couple of years and then rising to about 73.6% by 2023. The U.S. deficit for fiscal 2013 is estimated to be about 4% of GDP, down from 7% in 2012 and 10.1% in 2009. The deficit is estimated at 3.4% of GDP in fiscal 2014 and 2.1% of GDP in 2015. Spending levels increase closer to the 2020s as more people reach retirement age. Lower projections on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security spending have reduced the cumulative deficits over the next decade.

The NYT cautions against possible further watering down of the climate change bill as it goes to the Senate after clearing the House. Only 45 yes votes can probably be counted on, and 23 fence sitters. Among the watering down provisions is one that postpones asystematic accounting of carbon emissions from corn ethanol, at the urging of the farm lobby. A mandatory tarifff on imports from countries that do not adopt comparable systems for controlling emissions. The bill aims for a17% reduction in carbon emissions from 2005 levels by 2020 and 80% reduction by 2050. It also provides money for developing more energy efficient vehicles and buildings.

The Conservatives get a big boost from the 2021 budget. This budget increased the corporate tax to 25% by 2023 from 20% under previous Conservative governments of Cameron, and 19% under May. A survey by YouGov shows 55% of the British public thinks this budget is "fair," only 16% saying it is "unfair." This is the highest rating for any British budget since 2009. For Boris Johnson's Conservatives this means a 4% increase in popularity just in the last week up to 45% and Labour under Keith Starmer dropping 4% to 32%. This has opened a 13 point lead for the Conservatives likely to show up in the local elections coming up. This Conservative lead is higher than the 44% vote share for Boris Johnson's Conservatives in the general election.

Meg Whitman, H-P CEO, repeated her statements that a recovery was four or five years away. She sees little sales growth till 2015 and predicts losses. H-P's share price fell by 13% on Oct. 3, 2012. Whitman said in an interview that H-P has failed to invest in research and development. She was critical of lack of R&D investment under Mark Hurd. But says many of the problems go back to when Carly Fiorina was CEO in 2005 and made the acquisition of Compaq. The acquisition approach has worked poorly for H-P, with lack of R&D within H-P. H-P's financial position also worsened with the $10 billion paid by Leo Apotheker, Hurd's successor, for Autonomy Corp. Internal software systems disconnected costs from revenue, so that in 2011 field selling costs increased by $1 billion even as revenue decreased by $5 billion. A series of management changes made things worse through poor decisions, inconsistency and lack of focus, all of which will take years to correct.

Procter & Gamble, America's largest maker of soaps and detergent increased sales during 2020 by meeting demand for higher priced soap and electric tooth brush costing $300. P&G also makes diapers and Gillette razors. The company is making more high end products to boost sales. Consumers stuck in their homes are willing to spend more to keep themselves and their homes clean. This is also a requirement during the pandemic and considered a wise consumer spending item. P&G generated $3.9 billion in net income for 2020 fiscal 2nd quarter, with sales of about $20 billion.

A Russian Kinzhal hypersonic missile attack on Kviv is repelled with all missiles shot down on May 16, 2023. For the first time in the war the missile attacks are causing far less damage than in the early days of the war. The televisions late night comedy show with political overtones was a show that lasted 30 years. It goes the way PBS goes as PBS funding is no longer renewed by the US Congress and PBS seen now as a leftover from the 1960's. PBS covered a better part of the Cold War period from 1960 to 1990 and continued for another 35 years before funding was cutoff under DJT. The situation is different today with the rise of Asian nations, China and India. The Voice of America was also a part of the 1960's period and covered the Cold War, and lost its focus after 1990's. VOA is also being defunded for lack of effectiveness. New media, and new ways to reach the American people with new ideas, and reach the people of the world with new ideas are needed today.
