Sabine Kinkartz of the DW.com looks at the way in which Olaf Scholz achieved what was seen as impossible through patience, grit, and hard work in the face of adversity. SPD was seeing poll numbers of as low as 15% in the spring of 2021, just months before the election. Scholz believed in his party's ideas for the renewal of Germany, remained undeterred even after losing an election to lead the SPD to Esken and Walter-Borjans in 2019, when Esken and Walter-Borjans reinforced the idea that the SPD should stand for workers and families, what it always stood for. Scholz was put forward as candidate by Esken and Walter-Borjans in 2021 with conviction. By Spring 2021 it was clear that Scholz had achieved the impossible, getting the conservative Merkel and the CDU, with instincts against borrowing in all situations, to agree to a huge aid package for Germany to fight the pandemic, and a huge aid package for the European Union to fight the pandemic.  That Scholz remained undeterred in his campaign by low poll numbers and went on campaigning on the basis of convictions about what is right for Germans and Germany, comes from deeper convictions from his days growing up in the Hamburg youth wing of Social Democrats in the years following SPD's Wily Brandt and the post war recovery. Germany's most remembered leader after Adenauer, Willy Brandt was leader of the SPD Social Democrats from 1964 to 1987, and chancellor 1969-74. Both Adenauer and Brandt are respected some 50 years later in the world and in Germany. That Germany is going back to this tradition of leadership after the period of the Merkel years when Germany was held back, brings new hope to Europe and the world. In allying with the Greens under a younger generation leaders Scholz saw the promise of an opportunity to tackle problems of climate change and investment in infrastructure together. Both parties see borrowing as essential to invest big in the future. Scholz message to Germans, Europeans and the world is - "Big jobs, but our country is capable of doing them." A message sent out from the US by president Biden, and from Asia by the Indian prime minister. ...

Pollock's interview with Geroge Shultz, Reagan's senior economic advisor and Secretary of State, at his office in the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He says the U.S. can find its way out of the current economic crisis the way it did during the early Reagan years. On the Fed's loose monetary policy he says the Bernanke Fed's contribution to the economic crisis was very easy money. Now that we have it we realize that its going to take something different from easy money to get the economy moving- not just more money. Three quarters of the debt issued by the U.S. in the last year was bought by the Fed, and the Fed is monetizing debt when it buys debt because at some time this ends up getting out into the economy. Shultz sees the tax rules as being about more than rates. Corporate tax rates should be lowered by cleaning up preferences. But what is most important is predictability and an environment where business feels there is less uncertainty when investing. Shultz says Romney should read his memo to Reagan before Reagan assumed office, excerpted in the WSJ, "Advice to a New President," May 26, 2012. David Kirkpatrick, former Cairo bureau chief of the New York Times, gives an account of how the Obama  administration was split in its support of Egypt's beginnings in democracy. Chuck Hagel at Defense, and John Kerry at State Department, sent signals to the military that were different from that of some other members of the Obama administration. General Mattis at Central Command blamed president Morsi's failure on his " imperious leadership." General Flynn headed the Defense Intelligence Agency at the time of president Morsi's ouster by the military. Both Mattis and Flynn later joined the Trump administration with Mattis at Defense.  This report says president Obama accepted the military takeover. President Obama aroused hopes for democracy at Cairo University soon after he became president but he was not able to develop a coherent policy and support within his administration for what would be a difficult transition to democracy in countries that for decades have been ruled by the military. President Trump merely continued the policy followed during the last 2 years of the Obama administration.      ...

Jennifer Steinhauer of the NYT says the U.S. Congress is acting as a counter balance to  president Trump to maintain America's postwar policies common to both Republican and Democratic presidents and seen as part of core values- support for NATO and the mutual defense enshrined in Article 5 of NATO, support for the trans-Atlantic alliance. Senators in Congress are now voting overwhelmingly to support these values. This is seen in the manner the leading Republican on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee sees his job- to retake the important role Congress and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee has historically played in making foreign policy. His view is that the committee he chairs had become a kind of debating society. It is also seen in the way Corker handled a Russia sanctions bill giving Secretary of State Tillerson time to seek improvement of relations, and when time had run out pulling together all members of the Senate to pass the Russia sanctions bill. That bill passed the Senate by 97 for and 2 against in an overwhelming show of support for Congress to make its own foreign policy moves.  ...

Peter Muller and Dirk Kurbjuweit of Der Spiegel interviewed the European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker in June 2017. Juncker gave his views on the Trump rejection of the Paris climate change agreement, and Brexit following the losses for the Conservative party in the British parliamentary elections. On the elections in Netherlands and France, Juncker says the populists have still won millions of votes. Juncker says many politicians in traditional parties have parroted the talk of the populists, and in this way becoming populists rather than taking on the populists in the way Emmanuel Macron has done on the issues. Juncker is pushed to answer questions about the difficult relations before Brexit talks after his meetings with the British. Der Spiegel presents the idea of a confrontation and collapse in talks because the EU wants to talk about its citizens and billions of dollars owed and the British about future relations. With the uncertainty following elections in Britain a cloud hangs over Brexit talks. Juncker says when asked about Plan B, that it is upto the British now because the EU is ready to talk, even early the next day. ...

Country living has become an attractive option during the pandemic. Thousands of city residents are fleeing cities such as New York, Paris and London to be closer to nature and more spacious accommodations than the small city apartments. In the U.S. 39% of city dwellers in one Harris poll said the virus made them think of moving to less crowded areas. In France 38% of potential home buyers changed their searches to look further away from big cities as they looked for more room and garden space. Remote working and many professions encouraging their workers to work from home during this pandemic are giving momentum to this trend. Another factor is the cost of living in the city after the drop in income. And the risks in public transit, getting around in traffic jams, congested areas making social distancing routines difficult increasing chances of infection, are all part of the story. New York, Paris, London and Madrid are the hardest hit cities in the world. This extends to Beijing and Mumbai, Sao Paulo which are also hard hit by the virus. ...

The situation in Brazil for empregadas or domestic workers is similar to the situation in India, two of the hardest hit countries by coronavirus. Domestic workers played a large role in Indian homes in cities, and in Brazilian cities. With the dangers of virus spread and social distancing many of the domestic workers are kept away and homes are now cleaned, meals cooked, by the homeowners. Some empregadas are finding other ways to make a living by preparing meals and selling them or providing them to homes they worked in. Domestic workers in India are also doing this.

More women tend to work in sectors such as retailing and personal care, and with the hardest hit sectors including fields in which we find more women such as education, leisure, hospitality, a lot more women will be affected. The unemployment rate for women and men started at 3.5% in February before the pandemic. In April the unemployment rate went up to 14.4%. Of this women unemployment was at 16.2% and men was at 13.5%. The women were adversely affected where their presence is highest - in food preparation, health care support and personal service.

Italy and the European Union turn to former ECB president Mario Draghi for leadership of the new government in Italy. He is seen as the best choice for Italy's recovery with financial help from EU funds. Mr. Draghi has his personal reputation as ECB president for recovery of the euro currency in the face of austerity policies pushed by the German finance ministry, and the 200 billion euro funds going to Italy, to ensure a recovery. "Consciousness of the emergency entails answers that are up to the challenge," says Draghi.

Potential escape routes for Boris Johnson who as British prime minister said he would never ask for an extension of the Brexit deadline of October 31, 2019, rather die or be in a ditch. One escape route is for him to resign and for the Queen to appoint Mr. Jeremy Corbyn as prime minister of Britain. But even this is not certain, someone else could be chosen. It is now in parliament's hands what deadline to set for Brexit, likely one for January 2019, and one that Boris Johnson would then have to take to Brussels.

The 2019 election recorded the lowest turnout in Nigeria's history. Voting was especially low in the south where opposition candidate Abubakar was ahead, and much higher in the north and northeast which has consistently supported president Buhari. This BBC report says voter apathy seems to have set in. In the north Buhari is seen as a principled man of the people helping him get a lead of 4 million votes. Even though security concerns have affected about 2 million people in the north from Boko Haram militants the INEC made provision for 400,000 displaced people to vote.

Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party is tied in the 2019 elections with Benny Gantz's Blue and White Party with 35 seats each in parliament. Netanyahu's right wing party bloc controls 65 seats giving it a majority in the 120 member parliament.

Gantz says "we founded a true alternative rule to Netanyahu." Extreme right wing parties did not get elected to the Knesset. Labour Party and left parties also lost votes in the contest between Gantz and Netanyahu, leaving Gantz without enough seats from his left bloc in parliament.

The NHS Nightingale hospital was built in 9 days by converting the ExCel convention center in east London. This is the largest hospital of this kind ever built with 4000 beds. Prince Charles opening it by video link from his home in Scotland said it was " a spectacular and almost unbelievable feat of work." The hospital is named after the founder of modern nursing Florence Nightingale. The British government drafted hundreds of army engineers to help contractors build the hospital in record time. It will need 16,000 staff and hundreds of volunteers.

The Italian comedy movie "Quo Vado," became a hit in Italy in 2016, premiering on Jan. 1. It tells the story of a government clerk played by Checco Zalone, whose only aspiration in life is a 9 to 5 government job for life. It lets Italians laugh at the past in a Italy that is changing. Today, the Turin newspaper La Stampa points out from its survey, two of three Italians would take some risk if it means career advancement. Yet public sector job protections remain firmly in place even as the private sector is changing rapidly not just in Italy but in Spain and other parts of the European Union.

Migrant workers in China are not allowed to bring their children with them when they move to work in factories located in urban areas. This is the large price being paid for the rapid industrialization in China for 2 decades 1990-2010 by the 61 million children of migrant workers. Lixin Fan's documentary "Last Train Home" documents the life of children of migrant workers separated from their parents for long periods of time. Analysis from the All China Women's Federation shows 75% of the 61 million children left behind by migrant workers have parental visits once a year mostly during the national Spring holiday. 82% of these children want their parents to come back home and 42% say they have no one to talk to when they feel bad. A large proportion of the children are missing parental attention at the most sensitive age when they most need it- 38% left behind are ages 1-5, 32% ages 6-11.

Obama is not going to shy away from tackling all these issues in his first 6 months and he sees this as part of the solution, the simultaneous attack on all these problems which are interrelated as far as the economy is concerned and how it impacts the people. Health care for instance is a serious problem as the economy deteriorates and job losses increase and the highly indebted people find health care unaffordable, which the President emphasized with statistics to this effect. He also called for patience and support with restoring the banking system even though bankers have lost the trust of the American people. More money will be needed and his administration is working on all the details.And he reaffirmed his view that there is no waste inthe nearly $800 billion Stimulus plan, and his promise to keep a sharp eye out for wasteful spending by state and citiy officials..

US Congress cuts to Corporation for Public Broadcasting (NPR and PBS) of $1.1 billion for 2 years. It passes Senate 51-48. $7.9 billion in cuts to foreign aid programs were passed in the Senate bill. Native American and tribal radio stations in 9 states are protected.

Note that no cuts to HIV $400 million which is protected, and also for maternal care and malaria, and tuberculosis. These programs will be protected with new language. Also protected, by Senator Moran of Kansas, are food aid programs used by farmers- Food for Peace, Food for Education and child nutrition.

Russian president, Vladimir Putin, tells academics and journalists at an event called the Valdai Discussion Club, he had reservations about expanding the state sector by approving the deal for Rosneft to acquire TNK-BP assets. His motivation for doing this was the endless shareholder conflict between the Russian partners and BP. Putin says he warned British prime minister Tony Blair that a 50%-50% ownership venture would not work as nobody was in control, and described this as so bad that "sometimes they were fighting each other with their bare hands." The injection of private ownership into Rosneft with the 20% stake for BP would provide stability for the company and was the bright side to this. Foreign academics and journalists participate in three days of discussions with Russian academics and journalists in this event. Putin has no new vision for this third term beyond consolidating and protecting the achievements of the last decade.
