Of the estimated 14,400 candidates for provincial elections in Iraq, about 4000 are women. And security improvements have enabled women even in Basra to stand up for elections. In the current Iraqi constitution there is amandate for 25% of seats in Parliament to be reserved for women, but there is no such provision for provincial elected parliaments. This does not imply that years of lack of representation in the last 50 years under dictatorships, and the rule of religious parties and militias, is going to be easily overcome. Many qualified women simply don't want to risk standing for election because of threats to their safety and the male dominated culture that prevails. Its the courageous ones who are standing. The hope is that women can also put adent in the deep corruption that prevails in government and bring a new perspective and better representation of society.

Andhra Pradesh on India's southeast coastline with 25 parliament seats and Bihar in India's north and east with 40 parliament seats and long history of being part of the BJP led National Democratic Alliance are now key to a five year term for prime minister Modi in India. Modi's BJP party won 240 seats out of 543 in parliament.  Chandrababu Naidu of Telegu Desam Party won 135 seats in the state Assembly election in Andhra Pradesh (NDA), all but 18 seats. In the last 2019 election the Opposition YSRCP party won almost all the seats in the state assembly and in 2024 lost almost all the seats. In 1995 Telegu Desam Party joined Atal Bihari Vajpayee's BJP to form a government and during elections that followed for Vajpayee's 5 year term (1999-2004) he was part of the NDA. It could end up creating a fuzzy-fuzzy picture of the President's leadership role on major issues facing the country, say some experts. Bill Clinton's period was a period of relative economic calm, the current times and economic uncertainty may actually require serious leadership.

Old Lane hedge fund firm with old Morgan Stanley executives, was bought for 800 million by Citigroup partly for the executive talent of old Morgan Stanley executives. Mr Pandit reaped $165 million from the deal and Mr Guru Ramakrishnan, the CEO, tens of millions of dollars. How successful a firm was Old Lane and where is it now? Old Lane was started in 2006. It has returned all the money to original investors last summer, broke even on its original investments, and it has not lost money in the brutal market conditions. The hedge fund unit is now pretty much closed and the executives like Ramakrishnan are leaving. With Citi's worsening condition the hefty price tag for Old Lane has angered investors.
