Here she discusses the different aspects of the debate on raising the minimum wage. Romer says the negative effects on unemployment are small. The impact on consumer spending is also limited. The anti-poverty effects are real for raising the minimum wage from the current $7.25 an hour, says Romer, as over half the families earning a minimum wage make less than $40,000 an hour. President Obama called for raising the minimum wage to $9 an hour in 2013. Studies show 13 million U.S. workers earning less than $9 an hour. Raising the incomes of these families by about $3500 an year under the president's proposal gives workers badly needed income to cope with rising cost of gas, food and other basic necessities. The effects on consumer spending are small, estimated at between $10 to $20 billion. Its main virtue is keeping the principle of fairness and maintaining social cohesion at a time of increaing inequality. Romer says there is competition for workers which makes it possible for workers at the lower end to get a fair wage, but does not account for the effect of high unemployment which takes pressure off raising the minimum wage in the market economy. Another benefit for countries of keeping a fair minimum wage is that other actions can be taken to improve competitiveness for business and manufacturing and reducing the deficit and be seen in a positive context of overall improvement. This is part of the case made in Europe for boosting the mnimum wage as austerity measures are taking place....

Should age be a factor for running for president of a country. In the U.S. the main candidates are all in their seventies. Elizabeth Warren is the exception. She is 70 yeas but looks much younger with a lot of energy. Sanders even at his age of 78 is giving it all he's got with gusto and nerve, and so is Warren at 70, and Trump at 76. So how does one decide in favor of youth with inexperience as compared with age with experience and belief in oneself and ideas. It is also pertinent that old can become new again. Mexico's newly elected president Lopez Obrador says spending for a new airport was not in the interest of a country with Mexico's social needs. He voted to cancel the project in favor of using a military airbase north of Mexico City and building new runways to complement the existing airport. The aiport project was a key effort by the outgoing administration of Pena Nieto. About $5 billion spent on the airport would be written off, and bondholders holding $6 billion in bonds could ask for payment.

The airport cost originally estimated at $10 billion is now expected to cost $13.3 billion. Mexico City airport handled 44 million passengers last year and the new airport was intended to handle future congestion.

Peter Bernstein's says it is vital to address the household sector that is the root of the problem. And the only way to do this effectively is to change the terms of the mortgages themselves and stop the flow of foreclosures, with the government taking on some of the losses from these changes in the mortgage terms. First, he says, thats where the crisis has originated. Second, in the previous recessions the household sector was not the problem, in this one it is the problem. Without returning it to better health, America cannot reverse the devastating course of this recession. Households are the primary customers of American business, and the wave of foreclosures, dropping house prices and job losses, destroy the optimism and morale of millions of Amrericans. "The risk here is not just humanitarian. Indeed the risk is also the preservation of the social structure of democracy and the future progress of America, " says Bernstein. Essentially Bernstein is saying that President Obama should put campaign promises for health care reform, and other agenda after addressing this issue. Obama has extended unemployment insurance as afirst step, he has responded to Detroit's auto industry needs, and has set up the stimulus package. But in the household sector and on mortgages the response has ben weak, thus letting this problem grow and leaving the roots of the crisis unattended. "To intervene promptly, directly and powerfully to counter the home price debacle" has not happened. Something that the New York Times has repeatedly stated in its editorials, including one last week. And without this hope and optimism is not likely to be built on firm ground. A sudden recovery in the stock markets, as in the 2nd quarter 2009, cannot substitute. ...

Peggy Noonan in the WSJ comments on U.S. president Trump's effort to work in a bipartisan way with Democrats on government spending, raising the debt ceiling, and hurricane aid. Noonan says this may not last, because president Trump lacks steadiness or the understanding and depth needed to make it work. A major problem is the eight months of policy wavering moving in different directions, and endless tweets showing a lack of depth, that have alienated many. This has hardened opinion in some ways says Noonan, and is a hurdle to making things work in a bipartisan spirit. Not much is predictable in the Trump administration as lack of steadiness is a singular feature.  Other problems for this bipartisanship to work is that it could alienate the right wing of the Republican party and the Freedom Caucus, as well as the growing left wing of the Democratic party.  In this zany atmosphere things could soon be back where they were.

DIW, a think tank in Berlin, says the government's goal of a balanced budget may be unsustainable in the current economic climate.
