He says the U.S. can find its way out of the current economic crisis the way it did during the early Reagan years. On the Fed's loose monetary policy he says the Bernanke Fed's contribution to the economic crisis was very easy money. Now that we have it we realize that its going to take something different from easy money to get the economy moving- not just more money. Three quarters of the debt issued by the U.S. in the last year was bought by the Fed, and the Fed is monetizing debt when it buys debt because at some time this ends up getting out into the economy. Shultz sees the tax rules as being about more than rates. Corporate tax rates should be lowered by cleaning up preferences. But what is most important is predictability and an environment where business feels there is less uncertainty when investing. Migrant workers in China are not allowed to bring their children with them when they move to work in factories located in urban areas. This is the large price being paid for the rapid industrialization in China for 2 decades 1990-2010 by the 61 million children of migrant workers. Lixin Fan's documentary "Last Train Home" documents the life of children of migrant workers separated from their parents for long periods of time. Analysis from the All China Women's Federation shows 75% of the 61 million children left behind by migrant workers have parental visits once a year mostly during the national Spring holiday. 82% of these children want their parents to come back home and 42% say they have no one to talk to when they feel bad. A large proportion of the children are missing parental attention at the most sensitive age when they most need it- 38% left behind are ages 1-5, 32% ages 6-11.

A vivid and amazing account of the the earthquake and tsunami that hit the city of Ishinomaki, Japan, 35 miles up the coast from Sendai. It tells the story of where different people were that day, and the hours of their lives before and after the tsunami. Hiroshi Kaneyama, is the mayor of Ishinomaki, who is in Sendai that day attending a symposium on commercialization of algae. He would drive up to a dark town filled with water, and no electricity, and find his way to a Red Cross hospital command center. Toshikatsu Kumagai, is a 34 year old newspaper reporter, who will find himself driving at 3.30 pm that day on a bridge over the Satagawa river, on the western side of Ishinomaki. He spots the first 19 foot wave and tries to make a run for it, racing towards a fence before he was swept away. He finds himself in a landscape that has become part of the ocean. He jumps on top of a plastic tub and is rescued by helicopter 18 hours later. Most of the students at Okawa Elementary School who lined up outside the school when the tsunami alarms sounded, were swept away. Taylor Anderson, is an American teacher who teaches English to Japanese students at 8 schools in this coastal town. She has been in Japan for over 2 years. At Mangokuura Elementary School, Anderson helps students ont the playground and then jumps on her bike heading down Route 398, Onagawa Highway, which runs along the coast, to her apartment. She will never make it, and her body is found washed ashore days later. In this city alone 2,283 bodies were found, 2,643 people were missing, 23,000 in shelters. The town of Onagawa with 10,000 people, near Ishinomaki, was washed away. And this is only one part of northeastern Japan hit by the earthquake and tsunami....

Agriculture Secretary Brook Rollins has told the president the importance of having the agricultural workforce for farmers in the US.

Even in the similar program under president Eisenhower in 1954 called Operation Wetback,  on which the current program is modeled, there was an effort to keep the agricultural workers on farms for essential agricultural activity. For a long time the Bracero program with Mexico was designed to do this with legal pathways to work in the US in the 1950's.

After 3 decades the US is finally offering the scale and scope of infrastructure investment overseas that is needed. President Biden says $200 billion will be invested in infrastructure overseas over 5 years at meetings of the G-7 in the Alps south of Munich in Germany. Along with its partners and with government and private investments the size of the investment will reach $600 billion over 5 years to 2027. This will include projects such as $2 billion for solar energy in Angola, and a $600 million submarine telecommunications cable connecting France to Singapore.

It is a combination of direct government aid and private investment. President Biden sees Build Back Better World as the overseas version of his Build Back Better America for workers and families in the US for which Congress has authorized $1 trillion in infrastructure and climate change initiatives in the US.

Microsoft shares were up 7% after the announcement about the departure of Steve Ballmer from the CEO position. Steve Ballmer became president in 1998 to run Microsoft's operations. He was a college buddy of Microsoft founder Bill Gates at Harvard. A poor decision in retrospect to acquire Yahoo for about $44 billion did not happen, as Yahoo did not pursue discussions. The efforts in smartphones with Nokia and the Surface tablet have failed to produce results. Under Ballmer Microsoft only gradually shifted to cloud computing. The departure of Ballmer comes as a major reorganization was underway in 2013, and the company was shifting its strategy to become a provider of devices and services in place of its main role making software sales for PC's....
