The Trump administration has blacklisted China's Huawei  and president Trump says that he considers it to be a threat to national security. He also sees it as a bargaining chip in future trade negotiations with the Chinese. China's president Xi sees his country's national sovereignty in how it sets its own economic policy and manages its economy as an issue. Both sides are far apart. Xi even cited the Long March led by Communist leader Mao to Yenan in the 1930's as an example of the fortitude needed by China in dealing with the American challenge.

The UK decision makes purchases of Huawei equipment for UK 5G networks illegal from the end of 2020 and gives carriers till the end of 2027 to strip out existing Huawei gear from 5G networks. The move Mr. Dowden, British minister in charge of digital issues, says will cost $2.5 billion and delay the development of 5G by 2 to 3 years. He said the whole sector suffers from a "global market failure" and is "dangerously reliant on too few vendors." The UK and Australia, U.S. decision will accelerate the development of more vendors in international alliance to come up with alternatives. Other European governments face pressure from legislators in Germany, Italy, and France  to reconsider decisions on 5G. In the UK some members of parliament are critical of the long time given to phase out Huawei gear in 5G networks.

What happens when a town grows so fast that it cannot cope- with overcrowded schools, 20 mile commutes that take 90 minutes, and a water system that fails frequently.  It started with South Carolina, a Sunbelt state cutting property taxes to about half to attract more people from neighboring states. Lake Wylie, South Carolina in America's sunbelt attracted so many newcomers, about 80% of its population, that it cannot handle the too rapid growth.

The school system placed a $15,000 impact fee to build new schools that is set on each new house constructed. The city council of the town placed a 16 month moratorium on commercial and residential rezoning requests, new apartment complexes and subdivisions. Similar bans on growth are increasing in South Carolina and booming towns in America's sunbelt as the consequences of unplanned haphazard growth with tax incentives are becoming burdensome.

The U.S. and India face difficult trade negotiations as India moves to build its Make in India campaign, building capabilities of Indian manufacturing companies for global supply chains. Mr. Trump will sign a $3 billion defense deal with India for supplying helicopters and other equipment to India. Indian policy on trade is to ensure local content and transfer of technology to build capabilities of local companies. The goodwill generated by the visit by Mr. Trump to India, and deals on defense could lead to agreement on other trade issues, as India and the U.S. balance other considerations such as the rise of China into the picture. This will take time and is likely to be done after the elections. Differences on tariffs will continue in the same way that differences with China led only to a partial deal, with contentious trade issues on technology left for the future.

China is gradually getting back to normal. With few new infections from coronavirus, factories are starting production again, and stores are reopening, people gradually coming outdoors.

For factories there is one problem- as Europe and the U.S. battle the coronavirus and impose their own lockdowns demand has evaporated. Factories are seeing canceled orders and having to operate with smaller number of workers.

All the graphs shown in this report for Beijing traffic congestion, Guangzhou subway rides and property transactions show the curves for 2020 way, way below the curves for 2019.

This also gives some idea of what the road ahead will look like in the U.S. and Europe. That the recovery will take time and patience after a difficult period ahead tackling the coronavirus state by state. Lost jobs, diminished confidence and fallen income will take time to recover.

Barbara Wesel of DW.com says 2017 will be a difficult year for the European Union. Elections will be held in the Netherlands, France, Germany, and possibly in Italy. The Netherlands election is coming up this month and the far right party led by Wilders is likely to gain as much as 25% of the vote but have to negotiate with other parties in a fractured parliament to form a government. Elections in France show Marie Le Pen winning the first round, with an uncertain result in the second round between Le Pen and Macron. A win by Le Pen could lead to the unwinding of the EU. In Germany another coalition government is expected with the SPD playing a larger role as it regains favor with the voters under the EU's Martin Schulz. Wesel says Germany and Merkel are looking like a beacon of stability and hope as the world looks for leadership with America looking inward to fix problems at home.

The first government of Mr. Thackeray's party was formed for the state of Maharashtra which includes the city of Bombay by Manohar Joshi in 1995.  Both the trade union movements of Mr. Fernandes in Mumbai and the ethnic politics of Mr. Thackeray failed to provide the development needed for the state of Maharashtra because of the lack of the technology and capital needed and the knowledge of industry needed that could be applied on an American scale, much like the flawed efforts of Mao's politics in the Great Leap Forward, and the Great Proletarian Revolution in the post 1960's period.   ...

Boris Johnson, UK prime minister, visits Mohandas Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad on his visit to India in April 2022. After returning from South Africa and following writing Hind Swaraj in 1910, Mohandas Gandhi set up the Ashram during the period after 1915 as the place where he lived and worked in organizing the struggle for Indian independence. This is where he started a campaign of spinning and weaving homespun cloth so that Indians would not buy British textiles in a form of non-cooperation with British rule. By 1930 this evolved into the Salt Satyagraha and noncooperation with British laws in making of salt. The British approved provincial assemblies as a limited self rule concept in 1936-37. In 1942 Mohandas Gandhi launched the Quit India movement leading to arrest and jail for Gandhi and his followers. After the war ended in 1945 Labour party's Clement Attlee was elected British prime minister. It brings a sort of self-discipline at a crucial time for the Adani enterprises in coal, renewable energy, ports and logistics. By taking note of the criticisms where Adani enterprises can benefit from scaling down the level of debt it puts the company in a better situation for the future. After two decades of breakneck expansion it provides the kind of pause needed to rationalize the entire business operation and put it on a stronger basis. As Iyer points out the Adani and Ambani story in ports logistics and telecom show a delivery of results that few other companies were willing to do. It is this kind of endeavor that made it possible for China to build a large economy over two decades. This also requires companies to take stock of the situation and impose self discipline and the measure of their future success depends on how they meet situations such as these where they are being tested and weak areas that need attention become apparent. ...

The views range from Rand Paul, Donald Trump to Republican leadership in the Senate under Mitch McConnell. Barry Eichengreen of the University of California, Berkeley, looks at problems in the British economy reflected in the sharp decline of the pound of over 10% which he says will get even worse. The problem is weak productivity growth. Eichengreen looks back in time to similar crises for the British currency the pound. In 1931 it was unemployment at 21% that made the pound weak. In 1949 the high war debt made it difficult to finance British imports. In 1967 under Harold Wilson the drop in productivity was a problem. In 1992 the cumulative loss of productivity and uncompetitive exports with British output per hour about 15% below Germany led to a sharp decline in the pound. The current crisis reflects falling productivity from a lack of investment in infrastructure, deterioration in educational levels, the lack of trained and educated people to fill positions. Frictions and inefficiencies as a result of Brexit compound the difficulties.  The brief look at the last 100 years for th British pound gives a better understanding of the outlook for the British pound, which will only get worse, says Eichengreen. ...

And character cleaves through all manner of difficulties.  Experts say the wrong way to do this is to draw up lofty resolutions that are big steps and gradually lose hope through the year as carrying it out runs into problems.  It is best to go small, to take many mini steps towards a goal and associate each mini step with positive feelings. The goal should also be fairly simple and something you already wanted to do, or always wanted to do.  Going small one can set new habits in motion through little actions done through the day at particular times. It may even start taking no more than a few minutes, that is just fine. Its the accumulated actions, and the learning, the positive feelings, that set up a new habit. Gradually without thinking too much about it this changes us over time whether it is trying to meditate, do yoga or some other exercize, tackle some priority, or do something fun that is also vitally helpful for our growth and development. ...

What was it like to be an American in those days? Sense of duty and a fighting spirit. Col. Dave Severance was commander of the Marines that landed on Iwo Jima, the 7 mile long volcanic island 660 miles south of Japan, on Feb. 19, 1945. The picture of marines raising the flag on the top of Suribachi mountain was taken as Marines battled entrenched Japanese troops. James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy, was on the beach below, says this report in NYT, as Severance passes away at age 102 in La Jolla, California.   This picture has become a classic of American resolve and spirit since then. It is also about humility with what Queen Elizabeth calls "self-discipline and quiet good humored resolve" of the British and by extension Americans.  When asked about the photo and his role in Iwo Jima immortalized in John Wayne's role in The Sands of Iwo Jima, Severance said- "I never thought about it. Just that I was a Marine for 30 years and I never ended up in jail." ...

Inflation is above 4% in Germany for the last month. Shortages of workers is affecting most economies. There were a record 10 million job openings in the US mostly in the restaurant and entertainment industries. Low wages have led many to reconsider their careers during the pandemic, a phenomenon called the Great Resignation. Other people have dropped out of the workforce because schools have not reopened and there is a lack of good affordable childcare. The chairman of the US central bank Jerome Powell, says "It is frustrating to acknowledge that people getting vaccinated and getting Delta variant under control remains the most important economic policy we have. It is also frustrating to se the bottlenecks and supply chain problems not getting better- in fact at the margin getting a bit worse." ...

In 1946 he says a typical executive's salary was only 2 times that of a worker at a Caterpillar plant in Decatur, Illinois. By 2016 this had changed to where the top executive at Caterpillar was making over 400 times the wage of a typical worker at a Caterpillar plant. If Zambia can put in almost a billion dollars to make primary and secondary schooling free should not an affluent nation like the US make K-12 schooling free and support a big part of college and university fees. After the National Rally party of Le Pen wins 30% of the vote to Macron's En Marche 15% in EU elections, showing the unpopularity of Macron, Macron responds by calling for snap elections. Macron is taking an aggressive approach to stop NR party as so far  parliamentary elections in France  have led to voters on the left and right veering to the centre to avoid giving the far right National Rally of Le Pen a win. National Assembly elections also require getting 50% of the vote under different rules than EU elections.  Politico points out that the situation is different today as the NR is more in the mainstream of politics. Macron's hope is that the NR would increase its seat numbers from 88 but not as much, and that other parties such as the Republicains and the Socialist parties, the parties that governed France since 1945 would also make gains. He could then appoint a prime minister not from En Marche his party but from the Republicains party of Nicholas Sarkozy, French president (2007-2012), which supports Macron.  ...

Turning Open AI into for profit after starting as a supposedly altruistic tendency venture has opened new fault lines in the company with many people leaving. The AI is now becoming a kind of gold rush with companies putting huge price tags on talent and committing some of the nation's limited capital resources into directions that lead to the massive waste that led to economic crises in the 1930's. It is reported that it will put major stress on the grid and on electricity resources and that Tech companies do not want to pay for this. The government needs to act boldly with its own "bold persistent experimentation" to find solutions where the Nation keeps its edge in many emerging technologies yet does not waste resources, or divert resources from other purposes that are vital to the better lives that all Americans aspire to. These needs are in housing (3 million new homes), in small business uplift, in renewable energy and climate change action, in education to lift NAEP scores, in early childhood education, and in healthcare. ...
