China and Huawei lack the manufacturing capabilities needed to make some of the component parts that go into 5G systems. The U.S. Commerce Department in May restricted chip makers globally who use U.S. technology from supplying semiconductors to Huawei. This means Taiwan's Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company which uses U.S. technology in manufacturing 5G component parts cannot supply Huawei.

This gives the U.S. and Japan, South Korea to catch up with initiatives of their own to match China's state subsidies model that finances its semiconductor companies and 5G companies. 

U.S. Undersecretary of State Keith Krach says "We've utilized the strengths of semiconductor equipment companies and electronic design software companies to eliminate Huawei's access to the necessary sophisticated chips to build 5G systems and their most sophisticated smartphones." Huawei he says is a security threat to the U.S.

The average for tens of thousands of companies in the US is not in the 30's, it is 42 years. Taiwan Semiconductor was started by Morris Chang in his 50's. The reason for this is that startups need extensive experience, some of that experience comes from industry and companies the founders have worked with. With a deep knowledge of the field thay are in these founders can apply this knowledge to create new companies and discover new opportunities.

Even in government this is the case. In the recent appointments nominees selected by the incoming Republican DJT administration for Health and Human Services, Interior Secretary, Department of Energy, Homeland Security, had decades of experience in their field, some were governors of energy rich states. Another characteristic that comes with experience is the energy and aptitude for the job that they can bring.

BP's reversal on renewable energy is coming under criticism. There is a sense that the oil companies are profiting from public misery says DW.com, and calls for windfall taxes. Most people do not realize how prevalent noncompete is with about 30 million workers affected. What the new FTC order under the Biden administration does is to ban such noncompete clauses that prevent workers from seeking jobs or working with rival companies. This will increase competition and boost wages. This is another instance that shows free markets were never really free from its advocates since the Reagan era and free was limited to interests of companies or monopolies, where it conflicted with their interests there would be no freedom.

A Kazakh oil project that is $30 billion over budget, with no oil produced years after the project was started in 2005, is an example of what western oil companies can run into when tackling complex projects with many partners. It also shows why oil is becoming more costly to produce, keeping upward pressure on oil prices. The project is already costing western oil companies over $50 billion. This includes Italy's Eni, Shell, Total SA, ConocoPhillips, and Exxon. The project started in 2005 with collaboration between the state oil company LMG and the western companies led first by Exxon, and then as a compromise by Eni. Part of the problem is the requiredment of the Kazakh government to hire local employees who lack the necessary experience. The gas from wells has 17% hydrogen sulfide and it took 2 years to adapt infrastructure to this type of well. Housing for staff delayed the project for a year. In 2008 a target date of 2013 was set. In 2013 the project was stopped because of pipeline leaks which have still not been fixed. Causes relate to defects in pipe and in the way the pipe deteriorates in contact with the hydrogen sulfide. Kazakh government officials have responded to the delays by adding fines for the western oil companies, including a $735 million fine related to the pipe failure and gas burning. This may have reduced the motivation of the oil companies to give priority to tackling the issues. On the Kazakh side the problem is seen as being on the outside and lacking participation in the management of the complex project....

There are 240 Norwegian and Finnish companies in India, says this report in The Hindu. Nordic countries are providing green technologies to India. At the Nordic-India Summit held in Copenhagen in May 2022, the five Nordic prime ministers and prime minister Modi agreed to intensify cooperation on digitalisation, renewable energy, maritime industries and the circular economy. Denmark is helping India with ports and logistics. Trade ministers of Norway and Finland visiting India together  Feb 9-10 describe the efforts to provide Nordic technology solution in green transition to India. Trade between Norway and India has doubled in the last 3 years and the Norwegian Sovereign Wealth Fund is likely to become on the largest investors in India at $17.6 billion. This report in DW.com presents a situation where supply of oil runs out as demand way exceeds supply as shale oils in US are depleted, and no new reserves are found. A story in WSJ last week reports that the salty water from shale oil extraction is injected back into reservoirs at a rate that creates serious problems in the Permian Basian of the US including East Texas. The IEA forecast in 2026 shows about 97 million b/d of production and demand slightly exceeding this in both 2030 and 2050 which would suggest defossilization has not taken place. Yet the US pullout from defossilization under DJT is sure to be reversed by future governments in as short as 3 years, and the current DJT policy is simply a response to the cost of living concerns of the majority of Americans. The scenario that fossil fuels will be required forever is promoted by the oil companies and by OPEC+ including Russia. But this situation will reverse as the cost of living crisis and the low wages and incomes, loss of factory jobs, low savings, health care inflation, is tackled under the DJT administration and the US economy becomes stronger with lower inflation.  This scenario of  steady oil demand can be reversed if China and India and Europe push ahead with renewable energy and technological change as is happening today, and will not be seriously impacted when the US joins the battle with its renewable energy push in 2028. This is not just an optimistic scenario, it is a balanced one as private industry in the US will sense this and move ahead with development of new technologies for renewable energy so as not to fall behind and to pioneer on their own. That is the history of innovation in the US for the last 100 years and will not change. ...

Hewlett Packard was one of the founding companies to setup what is called Silicon Valley, with engineers Hewlett and Packard acting as pioneers of a new industry making computers. It is now moving from San Jose to Houston as more companies leave the high cost San Francisco San Jose area following the coronavirus pandemic, which has made remote work popular. Engineers and tech workers now prefer not to spend every day of the week working in office locations. This report in WSJ says the area around San Jose no longer has the pull it once had as companies move to other cities.

Justin Lahart offers these clues to a puzzle why is the US unemployment rate stable when no one is hiring? The 2025 US economic growth rate shows strong economic growth, the stock market is robust, and the unemployment rate is low, yet this is not reflected in the job market. What accounts for weak hiring? WSJ analysis shows that for US job market 2026- quit rate is too low at 3.2 million  (Dec 2025) instead of 4.5 million (March 2022), hiring is low at 5.3 million. And overall firms are not laying off people which is reflected in unemployment rate at 4.4%. As a result even with strong economic fundamentals the hiring is at low levels and opportunities for new jobs scarce. In previous years more people quit jobs, more people were laid off and some firms continued hiring. There is also uncertainty about tariffs that may be playing a part- companies can wait and see how the tariffs policy works out over the next 6 monthsand delay hiring. Ai may be another factor for some firms as they evaluate its impact on their hiring needs. Research at the Brookings Institution and the American Enterprise Institute shows that immigration crack down on entry into the US after Biden era surge means less people from overseas to hire and less from the pool of immigrants. A striking piece of this research is that instead of 140,000 jobs needed a month to keep the unemployment rate stable in 2024 the US economy now needs in 2026 after immigration crackdown only 15,000 jobs a month.  ...

Many of the companies from the dot com tech bubble of 1999-2000 which were given $1 billion valuations went out of business, including names like Webvan and eToys. The same buble behaviour is evident in 2012 as many companies such as Facebook, Pinterest, Evernote, have $1 billion valuations, similiar to 2000. This is asignal that valuations may have spun out of control. It takes a few deep pocketed investors to raise the valuation of startup internet companies to these untested companies.

Frances tax system places 40% tax on single earner family with 2 children compared to 20% in the US. France debates how to pass the budget and how to meet budget shortfalls in revenue, where to tax. France's top tax bracket is already at 55%, the second highest in Europe, which does not make the job of setting taxes easier. Additional 1.9 billion euros was to be raised by raising the tax rate for families that had tax liability of 20% if they made over 250,000 euros. This has raised 400 million euros only in 2025. This editorial in the Washington Post is critical of the French tax structure and says it is not just the rich who end up with higher taxes. It says that the average French single worker gets to keep only 53% of income after taxes, whereas American average single worker who gets to keep 70%. The extra 20% could be what the American worker pays for health care if as in some cases health care has become so costly in the US as to cost more than a mortgage, as reported in the WSJ in January 2026. Can government buy healthcare more efficiently and distribute it than families on their own. In the case of pharmacy products would removing the power to negotiate  prices with pharmaceutical companies conducted in government run by special interest groups as happened under US president Bush make it so expensive to buy pharmaceutical products that the advantage of smaller taxes is destroyed by a perverse healthcare system run by special interest groups with help of lobbyists. This is just to show that yes the US tax system with lower taxes can fail when other things go wrong in managing crtical costs such as healthcare and housing.   ...

Germany's DW.com looks at the influence of money in US elections. The Supreme Court decision in 2010 for Citizens United said First Amendment rights of free speech enshrined in the US Constitution were not based on the identity of the speaker as an individual or other entity. Corporations and unions were allowed the same rights of free speech. No limit was placed on contributions of companies. This has increased the influence of companies and corporate interests in US elections. This undermines public confidence in the election process. In one instance a billionaire said he would contribute $45 million a month to the former president's campaign. In one talk show the former president offered a position in his administration to that billionaire. In another instance a large Silicon Valley contributor offered large contributions to Harris-Walz and yet remained critical of Biden's choice of regulator Lina Khan at the Federal Trade Commission.  This shows the influence of companies in financing after 2010 is becoming more direct and blatant. Yet US has never had the kind of strict laws existing in Europe on election financing and not setup a public financing mechanism as in Europe. Even before Citizens United SC decision tech, pharmaceutical and oil companies lobbied heavily using the existing laws to their advantage to buy influence.    ...

The International Labor Organization (ILO) of the United Nations stands for advancing social justice and promoting decent work. It says in this edition of its journal that trade unions have stood their ground to better protect workers rights during the pandemic when workers suffered from its devastating impact and in a difficult environment. In the US 1041 of 1363 elections at companies led to unions getting the right to represent workers. This is the highest number of elections over two decades. Intel wants to be the second largest contract chip manufacturer serving companies such as Tesla, Nvidia, and others. New studies show that the most important thing to do is to pick the right company for mobility and advancement, getting further education and skills, and for job stability. The studies shown here were done by the Burning Glass Institute in Philadelphia and the Harvard Project on Managing the Future of Work, the Schultz Family Foundation. The study looked at workers in 200 companies over a 5 year period to understand what helps workers build good careers. Companies that rank high for employee retention and pay are Adobe, Alphabet, Boeing, Microsoft. Companies promoting workers without a college degree are Southwest Airlines, AT&T, American Express, CISCO. For launchpads to further mobility Apple and AT&T do well. Foreign investment in the electricity generation industry has be encouraged by Russia. Ane Eni the Italian electricity generating company is a big investor acquiring one of the 5 OGK companies when its investments are complete of about $6 billion. And other European companies are following suit. E.ON a German utility has bought 47% of another wholesaler OGK-4 one of the five companies of the former UES parent of these 5 generation companoies and will acquire 70%. And a Finnish utility has invested in a regional generator. Gaz France and Korea Electric Power Corporation are looking at making investments. Russia's electricity generating business is growing at 6% and Russia is the world's fourth biggest power market. Though profits are small at present it is hoped that with deregulation profit margins will be good. The market to businessusers is already being deregulated.

What US companies did not get early on is that as China's economy advanced local companies could make the same products for less and innovate to take a big share of the market. Ford exited China and GM took  $5 billion charge on its China business. Chinese makers of cars, EV's, laptops and cell phones have the major share of the market. Landlords and real estate brokers say only 10% to 20% of workers will return to their office when New York offices reopen after 3 months on June 22. Most companies are taking a careful approach and letting employees work from home or opening offices at reduced occupancy. Gradually this will increase from 20%. Yet offices are not expected to have a more normal look till Labor Day with people returning to work, and that too if schools have reopened.

There are concerns about public transit how many people it can accomodate with social distancing guidelines, and if more drivers lead to traffic jams.

Except for traders financial service companies employees are staying away from office. Tech and creative companies are taking their time and letting people work from home.

Remote work and transfer to other locations from San Francisco area mean salary changes of 10-20% for tech workers in Silicon Valley. Most tech workers in companies such as Google are now working remotely. This is leading to companies making plans for a future work force with decentralized staffs in many less costly locations. This should also reduce the pressure on living costs and the quality of life in northern California cities. The cost of living in other cities in the U.S. is 10-25% lower than that in San Francisco, Seattle or New York. Tech companies are following a policy of setting the wage based on location and local costs for housing and other costs.
