Who is Jordan Bardella, at age 28, from Seine St Dennis suburb of Paris, who as BBC reports never went to university, has no experience in government, and never worked outside of the RN National Rally party except one summer at his father's company. Is he the right stuff to run France asks BBC reports. Macron calling snap elections gives little time to National Rally to come up with a more experienced candidate. BBC News looks at Jordan Bardella and the role he has played in Marine Le Pen's RN party in France. BBC says until recently it would have been inconceivable that France would have a candidate this young and lacking experience.

The internet is flooded with coconut emojis this day July 22, 2024, as Kamala Harris gets the support of hundreds of thousands of donors and raises $81 million over 24 hours, and gets the support of most of the members of Congress, Senators and Governors in her party. The coconut emojis relate to a story about what her mother used to tell her when she was young and what Kamala laughed about in a speech-  : “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree? You exist in the context of all in which you live and what came before you.”

A complete reversal of the Monroe Doctrine (US president Monroe 1817-1825) policies -that kept the American continent north and south free of colonial European powers- is an affront to the US and has cost the US in Latin America. With fentanyl deaths and drug trafficking, migrant trafficking, interference by foreign powers in the Americas In Cuba, Venezuela and other countries, and ports owned by China in South America.  Hong Kong magnate Li Ka-Shing's Hutchison Holdings sale of Panama Canal ports to Black Rock for $23 billion takes place on March 4, 2025. The two ports on both sides of the Panama Canal will now be in American hands. Li Ka Shing started out fleeing from the devastated China of the Sino Japanese war to the British colony of Hong Kong, left school at 15 to work and started out with a small plastics factory in 60's Hong Kong. He then branched out into real estate as Hong Kong's economy expanded, and in the 2000-2020 period with rapid growth of China with US assistance (Clinton and Bush administrations) moved to acquire most of the ports and container terminals in the world. It is these ports that are now being bought back by the US. 23 ports and container terminals in 43 countries will now be sold back by Li Ka-Shing's Hutchison Holdings back to Black Rock under an agreement. None of this could have happened under the lackadiasical policies of previous administrations that led to first affront and then disastrous effects of migrant trafficking and drug trafficking in this hemisphere.   ...

Scott McCartney retires from the WSJ after 29 years. Since 2001 he writes the Middle Seat column in the WSJ to give readers better ideas on how to travel. Looking back he says things have not become that much better these days, even a bit worse with crowded planes and costly flights.

International business class is one of the things that are better with lie flat seats. Planes are safer today. Trusted traveller has taken the tedious aspect of security checks and made it less burdensome. Some of the credit and our thanks for the positive changes, letting airlines and airports know when they needed to listen, that credit goes to Scott McCartney's column.

During the coronavirus the market is pushing some buyers out of the market while other buyers are willing to pay higher prices. Limited stock, cheap financing, and low fuel prices are pushing buyers into more expensive models with higher prices. The average new vehicle sold in August in the U.S. was at $35,420 according to J.D. Power. The auto market is following the housing market in this sense where limited supply is pushing up prices. Auto sales declined by 20% in August. Younger buyers are being priced out of the new vehicle market and auto makers are focusing on higher margin vehicles.

The win of 203 seats of 243 is the path to stable government for the industrialization of India into one of the advanced economies of the world similar to Japan and China in Asia. It is also about the aspirations of youth in one of the world's ancient civilizations. Buddhist civilization of Asia (China, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia) had its birthplace in Bihar region of northeastern India. It is now likely to find its place on the world map from ancient universities to the Buddha's ancient sites and youth finding their place in the modern world. Germany's Foreign Ministry warned in a cabinet note that investment by China's COSCO in Hamburg port terminal "disproportionately expands China's influence on German and European transport infrastructure as well as Germany's dependence on China." Germany handed over a 25% stake in the Hamburg port terminal to China's COSCO shipping with the decision approved by chancellor Scholz. Several government ministries in Germany including the Economy ministry headed by Habeck and the Foreign Ministry have opposed the bid which is seen as having geopolitical aspects as Germany has no stakes in Chinese ports. "On behalf of the Foreign Ministry, I point out the considerable risks that arise when elements of Germany's transport infrastructure are influenced and controlled by China- while China itself does not allow Germany to participate in Chinese ports," said the note from the Foreign Ministry brought forward by Anna Luhrmann, Minister of State for Europe.  China is seen by Germany and NATO as posing security challenges. "In this respect the acquisition of the container terminal does not only have an economic aspect, but also a geopolitical aspect."  ...

Germany stands out as an outlier in the percentage of cars imported into the US and not made in the USA- for VW this is 80% and for Mercedes 63%. Only Hyundai falls into this category with 65 percent and it announced a $21 billion plan for investment in the US including a $6.5 billion steel plant in Louisiana. All other foreign companies import about half or less of their sales into the US. VW and Mercedes could follow Hyundai in making the shift to making in the US. Honda makes 65% of its cars and Ford 80% in the USA. Peter Navarro, senior Trade adviser to DJT says-"foreign trade cheaters" countries  such as Germany and Japan, South Korea have turned America's manufacturing sector into a "lower wage assembly operation for foreign parts." Not said is that the Clinton, Bush and Obama administrations, the "smart" economists at Ivy League universities, and America's finance sector looked the other way as this destroyed industry after industry and American manufacturing, destroying America's foundations, its broad middle class.     ...

On Gandhi Jayanti a look at American president FDR's contribution for Hind Swaraj. It could be said that Cordell Hull's speech (full text here) on July 23, 1942 on Roosevelt's clear direction was a form of declaration of independence for India by the US in 1943. This is also why there was nothing different Clement Attlee could do after winning the British election in 1945 except send Mountbatten to India to prepare for a Free India.

Let sleeping tariffs lie is the approach of S. Korea, Taiwan, Japan, China, India, European Union, Germany, UK-  expect all trade agreements with the US to remain in place after Supreme Court decision as no country wants to go through the intensely difficult process of renegotiating on tariffs. It is also the case that DJT can replace these same tariffs using other tools and different legislation passed by Congress to stop unfair trading practices by other nations. The president is also appealing to the public, some of the tariffs are about fentanyl flows into the US, the unfair trade practices and subsidies were a problem for the Biden administration and rebuilding manufacturing was the goal of both DJT and Biden, and will be for future administrations.  When the media NYT, Washington Post respond they are following the editorial line taken that opposes the DJT administration on all issues, when WSJ respond it takes the textbook approach of economists and finance people that free markets are best without considering the real life issues. This is why the president said at his press conference after the Supreme Court decision that 22 Nobel Prize economists had said the economy could not be turned around for growth and low inflation in 1 year, and were proved wrong after the experience of 2025 with low inflation at 2.8%, low unemployment 4.3%, and growth of 2.2% in real GDP (with strong growth in quarters 2&3 of 3.8% and 4.4%). Expect all tariffs to be in place under other legislation to be in place in coming months. ...

Immigration and Gaza conflict play a part in the support for Greens and for support of Reform UK in the election in Denton (Manchester region) in England. Labour comes in third with 24% of the vote with Reform UK at 28% and Greens at 40%. Hannah Spencer, a plumber, gets elected to parliament by appealing to the Muslim vote, and students. Reform UK does just the opposite by appealing to nationalist British voters who are anti-migrant, following an asylum policy for migrants and placing them in hotels that is highly unpopular in England. Labour's loss is in a working class district that it has held since 1906.
