Consider the number 76%. That is how many of the population of Ghana that are at risk of drinking contaminated water. Today March 22 is World Water Day. Ghana is one of Africa's better developed regions, which suggests that much of Africa is also at 76%, and it may also be true for much of Asia outside of China and now India with PM Modi's Jal Jeevan Mission, and for Latin America. Nothing could be more vital than water and it shows how little is known outside India of Jal Jeevan and what it does for 1.4 billion people, that it does not get mentioned in UNESCO's report. Behind this is the will and tenacity and a belief that it can be done that clean tap water can reach every household in India once resources are set aside to do it and it is executed on time.

M Vanitha is the Project Director and Ritu Karidhal is the Mission Director for India's Moon Mission, Chandrayan 2. The two women aerospace scientists were in charge of the mission's details. India's moon space program may be the only space program in the world where the mission directors are women aerospace scientists. The Head of ISRO the organization running the space program, Mr. Sivan, is a aerospace scientist with 36 years experience in all types of rocket design and technology, who headed the Vikram Sarabhai Space Center and the Liquid Propulsion Systems Center. Mr. Sivan took over in 2018 and directed the program to the launch in July in the face of delays and technical problems with the Vikram Lander. Ram Manohar Lohia is the Gandhian with a world view having been educated at Humboldt University in Germany, who took Gandhi's idea of the equality of all men and women into the India of the post 1950's. He mentored Mulayam Singh Yadav and other leaders who brought tribals, the lower castes, women, Muslims and others into the mainstream of Indian society in the 1990's and afterwards. He also created the first opposition movement in India giving Indian democracy a good framework. See the president respond in this video in the WSJ. He says look what we have done in getting all the legislation passed to rebuild the economy. It took all the wisdom, intelligence and experience to do what no president has been able to accomplish in the decades since the 1960's- to have the courage and wisdom to disengage from wars in remote parts of the world that started from the Reagan-Bush period that were carried on through the Bush-Obama-Trump administrations. And to use the contacts in the Senate developed over decades for bipartisan efforts to rebuild America with trillions of dollars in capital investment, the kind of rebuilding that took place in the Truman-Eisenhower and Kennedy administrations in the 1950's and 1960's following the war. After the pandemic similar to after the War in 1945, the whole world needs the leadership of America to set a new path, to faith in a better future.

City authorites are bulldozing vacant lots in Chicago, Pittsburgh and Detroit. Hundreds of vacant lots can be a problem for cities. Clearing these vacant lots is the first step to building new housing that is badly needed today. Detroit's population has fallen by two thirds, Pittsburgh by half, and Chicago by a quarter since 1950's. Detroit's land bank holds 63,000 vacant lots, Pittsburgh has 13,000 city owned lots being transferred to a land bank. Chicago has 10,000 vacant lots and 16,000 lots caught in a mess of unpaid taxes and unpaid fees. The city is working on new laws to speed up the clearing and development of these lots. Many are in Black and Latino neighborhoods once known to be redlined, meaning the banks denied the places mortgages and speculators engaged in blockbusting to sell declining white neighborhoods from the shift to suburbs to black people.

Microsoft is calling for governments worldwide to enact regulation of facial recognition technology in 2019 so that it requires independent assessment of accuracy and prevents ongoing surveillance of specific individuals without a court order. Facebook and Google face questions on respect of privacy. Microsoft's president and chief legal officer, Mr. Smith, says delays could "exacerbate social issues" and stated that society is badly served by "a commercial race to the bottom."  Smith cited George Orwell's novel, "1984," in which a government tracks citizen's movements. China is using mass surveillance technologies. Smith says three areas of concern are racial and gender bias, privacy and mass government surveillance. Export of these technologies is also an issue being raised by many people. Russian president Putin visit to China covered by NHK's Analysis. This is the first visit after being reelected for Putin. China's president visited European Union countries and Serbia, Hungary recently. China seeks to keep its relations with the EU and stabilize its economic relations with the US because of its weak economy. China benefits with supply of oil at better prices in its trade with Russia that has reached $240 billion, at a time it's economy faces a large debt burden and a collapsing real estate industry. It needs markets in the EU for surging exports of electric vehicles. Russia is also probably reassessing the situation in Ukraine to position itself for an eventual settlement, as China clearly has no interest in the war in Ukraine and seeks to limit any negative fallout from the conflict in its trade and economic relations with EU and US.

Investopedia's Hiranmayi Srinivasan gives the average year over year Consumer Price Index by president as prepared by the Bureau of Labor Statistics's Adrian Nesta, and offers discussion of each president and inflation rates from Eisenhower to Biden. The highest Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, both lost the election for second term. Nixon and Biden are next. Nixon survived the high inflation rates. During the Biden presidency something else happened the pandemic which made people feel worse and compare the preceding president's inflation rate at 1.9% compared to 5.7% average per year. 5.7% adds up to about 23% increase over 4 years. The worst part was that basic food items eggs, bread and other groceries may have been priced at much more than 23%, and with added burden of higher monthly rent as landlords increased rent by much more than 23%. This meant dipping into savings and money saved for a house, destroying the American dream.

Left out in much of the media coverage is that Zelensky's popularity rating in Ukraine, after three years of war and everyone having lost at least one family member, is at a low of 16%, and most people prefer that he not run again for president, as reported in this In Depth report in The Times of London. After huge losses on the Russian side, Russia's economy on war footing and costs of the war, and on the Ukrainian side fatigue and losses with infrastructure badly damaged, there is only one way out with a negotiated settlement. Biden and NATO's support is mostly to give Ukraine a negotiating position for a settlement as a new president DJT takes office in the US, also looking for a settlement of the war not letting it drag on with nothing to gain for NATO or Russia.

The US Federal's half percentage point interest rate cut bodes well for stocks and bonds in the US, says this report in WSJ, as it reduces the burden of interest rates on small business that has a part of its debt in floating rates. The default risk component of rates also shrinks for large and small companies. A lot depends on how much the US is investing in manufacturing, in chips and science, in education, in infrastructure that reduces the costs to business and in its industries, which is the ultimate driver of growth. In this sense the Biden administration and Jerome Powell's Fed have accomplished a remarkable deal in the difficult period of the pandemic's four years 2020-2024. Much remains to be done yet this is a big deal, and the next president can leverage these strengths to set the US on the right path, the Way Forward for America.

Argentina's new president takes over a failing economy in 2019. Mr. Fernandez declared a public emergency until 2020. A legislative package recently passed includes tax increases on the wealthy, tax relief for the poorest, a 30% tax on foreign currency transactions abroad, and a currency cap of $200 per person per month imposed by the previous Macri administration.  About 70% of new revenues will go to social programs, including free food vouchers for two million of the poorest Argentines. About 40% of the people in Argentina are in poverty, according to the World Bank, a shocking figure for a country that should be doing better given its natural resources and agricultural resources. The economy is suffering from hyper inflation at over 50%, jumping external debt at 90% of GDP. Total debt is $332 billion including a $57 billion IMF loan. About half the total debt is in foreign currency and is hard to service now that foreign currency reserves have fallen from $66 billion to $43.5 billion. The debt restructuring strategy now is to delay as much of the $70 billion of repayments due before the end of 2020.  ...

Angela Merkel loses a local election in her region of Mecklenburg Pomerania in Germany. The CDU comes in third at 19% following the AfD anti-immigration party with 21%. The Social Democrats party gets over 31%. Commentators say this region is more likely to take an anti-immigrant stance, compared to other parts of Germany. The next elections are on Sept 18 in Berlin, which is very different from parts of the former communist East Germany. The CDU has embraced the themes of "homeland," and public safety, and Merkel says about the decision a year ago on immigration-"it was not about opening the border to everyone- it was about not shutting it to those who made their way to us from Hungary, on foot and in great need of help." Merkel is likely to regain her footing with voters, as the vote in Mecklenburg was more of a protest vote and Merkel has adapted current policy to check immigration. Peter Tauber, general secretary for the CDU, Merkel's party, sees the vote also reflecting anger of those who have lost out in the moves to globalization, and not just about immigration. ...

Cillizza points to two demographics that the Republicans missed in the 2008 and 2012 U.S. presidential elections. The Hispanic vote comprises 10% of the electorate. Obama won this demographic with 69% compared to 29% for Romney. Romney's extreme positions, to the right of Governor Rick Perry of Texas got him through the Republican primaries but left him exposed in the national elections as he defended his statements of support for "self-deportation." In this respect Reagan, Bush, Perry adopted moderate positions and favored helping children of immigrants get a good education so they could be integrated into American society. Perry even took a hit for his moderate position supporting immigrants in the primaries even before his memory slip in a debate. Romney failed to support even the Dream Act for a pathway to be given to children of immigrants supported by Mark Rubio, a Cuban-American Republican senator of Florida. The second key demographic is the young people vote ages 18-29. This was 18% of the electorate in 2008, and about 19% in 2012. Obama took this demographic with a lead of 34 points in 2008 and a lead of 24 points in 2012. So that even with diminishing support such large numbers meant there was a large cushion to win the election by combining several demographics even if the Democratic position eroded somewhat because of the economy and unemployment at near 8%. This is what happened because of the 6 out of 10 voters, or 60% of the electorate who voted, Romney won 51% to Obama's 47%. This enabled Obama to get the small victory margin he needed in the popular vote. In many ways Romney was "an unnatural candidate" as the Wall Street Journal described him in its editorial, being a private equity business executive fighting a election with Democrats fighting to protect middle and working class interests....

Bhupinder Bhalla, the Secretary, Ministry for Renewable Energy in India, talks to The Hindu's Jacob Koshy about India's plans for solar panel manufacturing. He says a key bottleneck is reliance on Chinese made components such as poly-silicone wafers. Manufacturing these components in India is key for the health of the solar ecosystem in India. Once this is established- and Bhalla goes over the action being taken- India will be able to export solar panels by 2026. He expects 40GW to be fully commissioned in the next 2 years.

The Financial Times looked into Mr. Adani's projects and financing and found that much of it comes from a scale of risk taking and business innovation, timely delivery that few businesses in India have an affinity for. Authorites sealed off villages to fight the pandemic. The three provinces produce 20% of China's foodgrains. This is the result of strict Covid policies followed in China to control covid surge. 

According to Jilin government one third of farmers lack sufficient fertilizer three weeks before planting begins. This could affect China's efforts for self sufficiency in foodgrains.
