Maria Bartiromo talks with President Medvedev of Russia. She asks him about the North Korean's nuclear missiles testing. Medvedev says "what has happened raises great alarm and concern." He says North Korea is close to Japan and S. Korea but is also close to Russia. He has had quite anumber of telephone talks with the Prime Minister of Japan and the President of S. Korea on this subject. He says the world needs to think about what measures can be taken to deter these programs. He is concerned about unemployment. 2.2 million are registered as unemployed but the number is much much higher. Russia he says is a hostage to the structure of the economy, and sees a danger in the overdependence on export of raw materials. He sees the crisis as an opportunity to change the "outdated and obsolete structure of Russia's economy." His idea is to use the extra revenues to support social programs and to radically change the structure of the economy.

Perry told viewers of the Republican presidential candidate debate in Florida on Sept. 22, 2011, he supports Social Security and would work to fix it for younger workers. On immigration Perry defended his policies in Texas. He opposes efforts to build a fence along the long stretch of the U.S.- Mexican border. Eventually China's stimulus efforts and efforts to build up its reserves of commodities like its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, may not boost demand for oil, iron ore and other commodities enough to offset the recessionary impact on the industrialized economies. And China's demand is large but not that large that it can tilt prices one way or the other. In the first quarter China accounted for 9% of global oil demand, compared with 55% for the largely recession impacted industrialized world. Stockpiling of resources is a temporary factor. Sanford Bernstein estimates the first phase of China's Strategic Petroleum Reserve may have boosted imports by 400,000 barrels a day in March and April. Another factor is consumption. Stimulus dollars pushed fixed asset investment by one third in the first quarter, yet consumer spending went up less than 10%. Consumption will remain weak. Ultimately China's stimulus efforts may act as a brake on sudden falls in commodities prices, and not support continual upward pressure on commodities prices right smack in the face of a deep recession and large underutilization of manufacturing capacity in the industrialized world....

Here is his personal account of how it all started and how anybody who raised any questions about these companies was given a lot of trouble by these executives and their lobbyists and the people whose support they bought with donations in Congress and in the political setup, all so that the executives at Fannie, Freddie and Countrywide could enrich themselves. In the end both liberal democrats and countryclub republicans shamelessly supported Fannie and Freddie upto the end when their dishonesty and failure was clear for all to see says Gigot. Says a lot about the political system, its only guarantee for good sense and honesty is in the quality of people and their courage, as leaders so often fail in so many basic ways.

At the height of the market a year ago Citigroup acquired Nikko Cordial for 1.6 trillion yen ($17.7 billion). Now in a reversal of an earlier decision, after announcing a loss of $8.3 billion on Jan 16, 2009 for 4th quarter 2008, Citigroup will consider Nikko Cordial a non-core asset, meaning that it would be sold if a buyer can be found in Japan. Japanese banks are relatively healthy and there are propects for finding a buyer there.

This WSJ editorial points out a big concern in the third quarter 2012 economic growth figures- the figure showing non-housing related investment contracting by 1.3%. It says the U.S. borrowed $5 trillion and all it got in return was 1.7% economic growth- 1.7% being the growth in U.S. GDP for the first 9 months of 2012. It also points out that the growth came from consumer spending and the Federal Reserve's money printing. The consumer spending would be hard pressed to continue if incomes remain stagnant without the capital investment and hiring from the private sector. Government spending accounts for 0.7% of the GDP growth, and estimates for private sector growth in output is about 1.3%.

Allan Meltzer, professor of political economy at Carnegie-Mellon University and the author of the most comprehensive history of the Fed, and John Taylor, atop Treasury official under George Bush both oppose expanding the powers of the Fed and putting it in charge of controlling systemic risk. Meltzer says the Fed exacerbated the crisis by keeping rates too low for too long, and did nothing to control systemic risk. He also says the in testimony to the House Financial Services Committtee, that the Fed has in its whole history never done well in controlling systemic risk. It has failed to see the storms coming. Kohn, vice chairman of the Fed, says the change is only incremental, as the Fed has asupervisorty role already. Taylor's view is that the Fed does best when its responsibilities are limited to its original role. A change would dilute its main mission of steering the economy and jeopardize its independence.

Boris Johnson wins the race to lead the Conservative Party and become the next prime minister of Britain. Several ministers resigned underlining the problem he faces lacking support from the Conservative party members who do not support exit from the European Union without some deal or arrangement with the EU. He will lead a minority government that could fall with the loss of support from within the Conservative Party itself. Boris Johnson beat Jeremy Hunt by 92,153 votes to 46,656. He now has a margin of only three votes with the help of the Unionist Party of Northern Ireland and faltering support from members of the Conservative Party who see Boris Johnson's idea of simply leaving the EU on October 31st deal or no deal as problematic.
