Here Simon Jenkins in the Guardian looks at the situation in Spain, where independence from Spain for Catalonia, could lead to independence demands from other regions such as the Basque region. He says opposition to devolution of powers to Scotland in the 1980's in Britain led to the drive for independence in Scotland years later. He sees the Spanish government's strong response as not the best way to deal with the situation. A better way is to allow some form of self-rule for regions such as Scotland and Catalonia, enough self-rule to accomodate regional aspirations. He cites the example of Slovakia with peaceful separation as the alternative if no agreement is reached.

California is feeling overwhelmed by the pandemic with patients treated in parking lots, in hallways, and in lobbies of California hospitals. This report looks at the situation in California as it reports 53,000 new cases on December 16, 2020. The entire state from high deserts to beachfront cities, from the San Joaquin Valley to Sierra Nevada resort towns is facing a growing pandemic. In Apple Valley, California in the southern part of the state the only capacity is overcapacity with hospitals at 200 or 250% of capacity.  The scary thing is that the health care system is reduced to being available only to the gravest, most urgent medical conditions.

Pakistan faces severe environmental problems says this report in DW.com. In addition to the heat wave, climate change, air pollution, degradation of natural resources, deforestation and soil erosion, there is the problem of access to drinking water. About 80% of Pakistan's population lack access to clean drinking water. By 2040 experts say Pakistan could be the most water stressed country in the region. A big problem is the lack of financial resources to tackle climate change with the buildup of debt. Another problem is the lack of a master plan for development that takes into account the need for protecting the environment and makes investment in renewable energy.

Following a $77 million loss at The Washington Post Jeff Bezos is working on restructuring its operations. The Post has 2.5 million paying subscribers. Bezos sees the paper with potential of 100 million paying subscribers. He sees the need to get more people from the middle of the country and cover topics people are concerned about. One suggestion was to do a third newsroom for social media and service journalism. This has run into problems with some of the staff resigning. Bezos has suggested one way to attract more people is to rewrite articles from other sources. Staff at the paper see by contrast the role of The Post in original journalism.

William Broeksmit built Merrill Lynch's business of trading financial derivatives with Anshu Jain in the early 1990's, and was later hired by Deutsche Bank with Jain for the investment bank of Deutsche Bank. He is found to have committed suicide by hanging, with multiple suicide notes including one to Jain. Coroners say the notes show Broeksmit felt he was being investigated in connection with probes into Deutsche Bank and was being abandoned by colleagues.

CEO Hainer and managers in Germany are seen as very focussed on spreadsheets and analytical approach to sales in over 100 countries. The only design studio outside headquarters in Portland, Oregon, was setup in Brooklyn, N.Y. recently, and the 4th CEO during Hainer's leadership since 2001 is the first to be given some degree of autonomy in making design and marketing decisions. Nike's market share in athletic footwear has increased from 35% in 2005 to 47% in 2014, as Adidas remains stuck at about 10%. The Reebok acquisition for $3.8 billion in 2005 is seen by U.S. Adidas managers as a distraction. Retail store executives visiting Germany say Adidas product cycle from design to product introduction of 18 months was just too long to meet the rapidly changing preferences in the U.S. This is now being cut to 6 months. It turns out that they cannot and are diverting important funds away from the Nation's priorities in transportation, housing, education, rural healthcare. Here is what happened-- When California Gov. Newsom used state's Medicaid budget for poor citizens and disabled for illegal migrants to give free coverage, Medi-Cal went $6.2 billion over budget in 2025. In Illinois the program for Medicaid coverge to illegal migrants estimated at $112 million annually now costs $800 million and parts of it are now suspended. California had not thought this thing through, with free medical coverage not available to even citizens of the US, why would unrestricted borders not overwhelm a border state's Medicaid system signed into law by a Texan president Lyndon Johnson for the people of this Nation. Democratic States are running into a logical fallacy that the European Union and Germany are already experiencing, stretching straining public services, which has nothing to do with one's sentiments. Gov. Newsom now wants to give this benefit for $100 monthly premiums in 2027. ...

China has emerged as the largest buyer of Iranian oil, in the face of sanctions by the Trump administration to cut Iranian oil exports. China has replaced French company Total for the Pars oil field. It is investing heavily in Iranian oil industry. Iran has offered a 12% discount for China's oil supply needs. China has promised to invest $280 billion in the Iranian oil industry and is seeking to pull Iran into its Belt and Road Initiative. India also seeks to continue its oil trading relationship with Iran, in the face of U.S. sanctions.

C. Raja Mohan says in The Indian Express that India needs to look at the big picture of modernization in a new world for world trade in which the US is reindustrializing, Europe is reindustrializing, and India is on the road to modernization by 2040 over the next 15 years. All three processes are happening at the same time. 

The old order of world trade destroyed the industrial base of the US and Europe, it also neglected India's modernization, happening with the unwitting cooperation and connivance of the business interests of the US and Europe. It will do little for India. India must also change it's industrial structure and modernization effort to fit into this new world and bring it's strengths to build a new world in which the US, EU and India modernize their economies, manufacturing base, and infrastructure in a win-win for all sides.
