With 3.7 million workers in the informal economy Italy is one of the worst hit European countries. Italy's south, including Naples and its capital Campania is one of the hardest hit. Italy's lockdown ended May 18, with some restrictions. Affected worst are small business owners such as shopkeepers, restaurant owners and market vendors, also hit are workers employed in tourism and entertainment. The Italian government has made a 600 euro emergency payment to self employed or part time workers, and 12 million workers have applied so far for these payments, about half of the workforce. A new payment by the government will cover workers in the informal economy with a55 million euro additional aid package by the government of prime minister Conte. Italy's economy will decline by 9.5% in 2020, exceeded in Europe only by Greece. The country is seeing a further erosion of the lower middle class after the difficult period following both the financial crisis of 2008, the eurozone crisis, austerity cuts which hurt people across southern European countries, Spain, Portugal, Greece, and Italy. It is also true that Italians came together during this difficult period in a way not seen since World War II and prime minister Conte provided much needed leadership for Italy, with growing confidence in his leadership. This provides a new sense of hope that Italy can come to grips with many problems it has faced in the last 2 decades, similar to that in other parts of Europe where investment in  infrastructure and manufacturing has fallen behind. ...

SDP candidate Olaf Scholz is seen as the most convincing of the candidates, and ahead of the Green's Baerbock and CDU's Laschet in a poll following the 90 minute television debate on German television. Scholz maintained an unperturbed demeanor as he responded to an attack from Laschet on a money laundering investigation being conducted on the finance ministry. He said Scholz was presenting a misleading picture because it was centered on the possibly illegal activities of a single employee in Cologne. He added that he had increased the financial oversight at the ministry since he took over in 2018. Looking at the problems facing German industry, and the challenges from climate change facing Germany,  Scholz had this to say on the scale of the effort needed in renewable energy- "We have 250 years of economic and industrial history behind us, based on coal, gas, and oil. And if we are to change that now that means we have to do an awful lot, for it to really work." The SPD goes into the election at this point with a six point lead over CDU. SPD at 26% vs CDU at 20%, Greens at 15%, in the INSA poll. China is exceptional in the speed with which it is moving on infrastructure projects. And this bodes well for American exporters like Caterpillar which is seein g big jump in excavator sales, and for China which may see thre fourths of the 6.5% increase in GDP in 2009 coming from infrastructure building. Fortunately there is still a need for alot of infrastructure development in China. Typical is the approval and start of work on the $930 million Xiangshan Island Bridge which will extend over the East China Sea and through mountain tunnels. Caterpillar CEO James Owen says of approval and start of construction as fast, "its something like nine months in the USA versus 9 weeks " in China. China has agood pipeline of projects and alot of planning work has been done for many years. For Xiangshan Island Bridge this goes back to1994. Liu Cijun completed a PhD dissertation in 1999 on bridge wind resistance, and the Ningbo native is now Chief Engineer for the project. Preparatory work on the bridge goes back to 2004 and the stone cutting ceremony in 2006. In August the bridge's feasibility report won approval from aplanning agency in Beijing, and in December approval by the Ministry of Transportation. Construction started in just 11 days after the Chinese government approved the project. China's investment in infrastructure has jumped by 102% in the 1st quarter of 2009 from a year earlier, according tho the National Bureau of Statistics. By comparison Washington has distributed $69 billion of its $787 billion in stimulus fundsto states and localities, which have spent $14 billion according to the WSJ....

A vivid and amazing account of the the earthquake and tsunami that hit the city of Ishinomaki, Japan, 35 miles up the coast from Sendai. It tells the story of where different people were that day, and the hours of their lives before and after the tsunami. Hiroshi Kaneyama, is the mayor of Ishinomaki, who is in Sendai that day attending a symposium on commercialization of algae. He would drive up to a dark town filled with water, and no electricity, and find his way to a Red Cross hospital command center. Toshikatsu Kumagai, is a 34 year old newspaper reporter, who will find himself driving at 3.30 pm that day on a bridge over the Satagawa river, on the western side of Ishinomaki. He spots the first 19 foot wave and tries to make a run for it, racing towards a fence before he was swept away. He finds himself in a landscape that has become part of the ocean. He jumps on top of a plastic tub and is rescued by helicopter 18 hours later. Most of the students at Okawa Elementary School who lined up outside the school when the tsunami alarms sounded, were swept away. Taylor Anderson, is an American teacher who teaches English to Japanese students at 8 schools in this coastal town. She has been in Japan for over 2 years. At Mangokuura Elementary School, Anderson helps students ont the playground and then jumps on her bike heading down Route 398, Onagawa Highway, which runs along the coast, to her apartment. She will never make it, and her body is found washed ashore days later. In this city alone 2,283 bodies were found, 2,643 people were missing, 23,000 in shelters. The town of Onagawa with 10,000 people, near Ishinomaki, was washed away. And this is only one part of northeastern Japan hit by the earthquake and tsunami....

Brandenburg Berlin metropolitan region of which Brandenburg and city of Berlin are separate states remains a strong economic region. This is where Germany has evolved under ruler Frederick since the end of the Thirty Years War in 1648. Dietmar Woidke of ruling Social Democrats is expected to win a fourth term in office with the SPD expecting 25% of the vote in the important state of Brandenburg next to Berlin. Even though the AfD right wing party is expected to do well approaching 25% of the vote, there are other factors at work. Sara Wagenknecht has rebranded the Die Linke Left party with immigration policy that is similar to policies now being accepted in Denmark, France, Netherlands and other EU countries that see the need to restrict immigration, drawing 15% support. A good example being Mette Frederiksen, Social Democrats in Denmark. A coalition with the Christian Democrats CDU with about 15% expected vote and Greens with less than 5% is likely for about 45% of the vote. Other factors that show a stable Brandenburg are the economy with the new regional airport hub of Berlin Brandenburg airport, a new Tesla factory, rich natural resources a third of the state of 2.6 million people being filled with forests and lakes, and a stable population after the reunification in 1990 without rural depopulation as in other parts of East Germany, only 12% people of immigrant background including Wagenknecht.   ...

The EU's competition commissioner to crackdown on pharmaceutical companies that are delaying the entry of generics drugs with various tactics that are anticompetitive. EU has raided the offices of several marge drug companies and retrieved documents that show this activity was going on. About 5% of medical bills or 3 billion euros coud have been saved from 2000 to 2007, if companies had allowed generics to enter the market earlier and not resorted to these antitcompeitive strategies. Like paying off generics companies or having so many patents on the ingredients of the drug, in one case 1300 patents on one single drug, and then suing the generics companies to tie up the case in the courts.

It says that electability of Sanders is no longer an issue, especially because the 2016 election is coming up with many surprises, including a changed election environment. Other possibilities raised in the editorial- the possibility that an independent like Bloomberg might run if Trump is nominated, further increasing the chance for Sanders to be elected president. By splitting the Republican party a Trump or Cruz nomination could also put the House in jeopardy for the Republicans, removing the House as a check if a Democrat is elected president.

France lags behind Germany and other countries in competitiveness. France's share of European exports decreased from 15.6% in 2000 to 12.5% in the first 5 months of 2011, according to Coe-Rexecode, an economics consultancy firm. Germany has used the last decade to lower social spending and state spending, bring wage restraint, and making industry more productive. France has not experienced a similiar process. Competitiveness and growth is needed for France to improve public finances. After the rise in borrowing costs to Italy France's premium over Germany to borrow for 10 years went up to 71 basis points on July 13, it is now at 62 points. France's trade deficit is rising and was 7 billion euros in April and May, according to Societe Generale.

With Amazon taking customers from specialty retailers on the basis of price questions are raised about the future of Best Buy. Best Buy competed by having tech savy salespeople and moderately lower prices. Borders lost sales to Amazon. Now this is happening in electronics as Amazon increases share. Customers can visit Best Buy to check out electronic goods and then buy on Amazon for the lower price, making Best Buy Amazon's showroom. Amazon's electronics and nonmedia revenue went up by 66% in 2010 to $18 billion. With Sony selling through Costco another advantage is eroding. Even with Circuit City out of the market Best Buy was losing market share (December 2010 figures show) in the key television and computing segments.

Walkway Over the Hudson is the longest pedestrian bridge in the world. It is 1.28 miles long, 212 feet above New York's Hudson River, 80 miles north of Manhattan. It opened in October 2009 after years of reclamation efforts and with new LED lighting that makes it usable at night. About a million visitors have taken a walk over the bridge. A local handyman, Bill Sepe, pushed the pedestrian walkway idea by forming Walkway Over the Hudson in 1992. The organization took ownership of the old bridge, built when Pougkeepsie was an industrial town, and in 2007 raised money. Work began thereafter, taking 16 months and $38.8 million to build the Walkway, and is now run by the state as a State Historic Park.

Only 23% of meals in America include a vegetable. The number of dinners made at home with a salad dropped to 17% in 2010 compared to 22% in 1994. Salads ordered at restaurants dropped to 5% in 2010 from 10% in 1989, according to NPD research company in its 25th edition of "Eating Patterns in America." The U.S. is going backwards in good eating habits and no enough attention is being paid to this in the debate about cost of health care. Airlines are using the savings from lower oil prices to do do much neded upgrading and improvements on planes, for improving airport facilities and to reward employees. Airlines are investing at the best rate in 13 years. Much of the investment goes to upgrade service for business class travel. As planes are full airlines have little incentive to reduce fares. American Airlines says it wil invest $2 billion to improve service inside planes. Air France-KLM says it is spending $1.2 billion to refurbish planes and modenize airport lounges, ground services. IATA estimate is for airline industry profits to go up from $11 billion in 2013 to $19.9 billion, increasing to $25 billion in 2015, almost doubling in 2 years.

Dubai airport had 67.3 million passengers in the 12 month period through Feb. 2014, according to Airports Council International. Emiraes airline is based in Dubai. It was setup in 1985 using a $10 millon grant from the government of Dubai and 2 Boeing 727 planes. The precipitating factor was a cutback in flights by Gulf Air between UAE and Pakistan. Emirates benefitted from a business friendly environment in Dubai and open skies policies that helped the aviation sector grow. Another factor helping rapid growth is that the CEO of Emirates, Sheikh Ahmed bin al-Maktoum, is chairman of Dubai Airports and Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, chairman of the low cost carrier Flydubai, and is the uncle of Dubai's ruling king Sheikh Rashid al-Maktoum.

The effects of a health scare about chicken and hormones on China's internet sites is affecting sales of Yum Brands store outlets for Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) in China. As most of the stores are company owned compared to 11% in the U.S., this is having an outsized effect on Yum Brands performance. Fast growth in China can be an asset as well as a liability if not carefully handled. Food is an especially difficult field in China with careful management and control of supplies critical. How the Philippines is tackling some of its problems especially the tax increases and sales taxes to increase the government',s tax collection rate which was a major problem there. 70% of the budget was going to pay interest in 2005, with little left to build roads, power supply and infrastructure. Endemic corruption among tax officials and loopholes in the tax code made things much worse in Philippines, than India and Indonesia. Ms Arroyo pushed through measures to increase taxes and to bring foreign investment into the country.
