The effects of the pandemic on education are seen in the drop in scores for 4th and 8th graders in the US for math and reading. In math at 8th grade cores fell from 34% being proficient in 2019 to 26% in 2022. For 4th graders from 41% being proficient to in 2019 to 36% in 2022. Utilities moved away from coal under the Trump administration. In 2024 energy from coal is three times costlier than energy from solar or wind. IMF forecasts for Greece's growth rate are proving too optimistic. The IMF forecast is for zero growth in 2013, and increases of 2.3% and 2.9% in 2014 and 2015. Even in its pessimistic projections the IMF forecasts a 1% downturn in 2013 and growth of 1.3% and 1.9% in 2014 and 2015. The government sector was a large part of the economy. Now that this is shrinking, the export sector which only represents 20% of GDP is too small to generate needed growth. Greece also lacks the competitiveness and the large foreign enterprises that operate in Ireland, making growth less likely. A major problem is also the 40 billion euros Greeks have withdrawn from their banks in recent years. Even the figure of 120% of GDP that is expected in 2020 under the March 2012, 130 billion euro bailout is a very hypothetical figure, having no sound basis. Landon Thomas cites a confidential study the IMF had circulated in February 2012, showing the long term prospect for Greek debt if growth does not materialize because of lack of competitiveness. It would increase the debt to GDP ratio to 178% by 2015, and leave it at the current level of 160% of GDP in 2020. Some experts say the whole debt sustainability analysis makes no sense, with the question being insolvency in the case of Greece, not illiquidity. And requiring a focus to bring debt to manageable level to create prospects for growth. The Wall Street Journal emphasizes this in its editorial on Feb. 29, 2012....

As Turkey's trade ties with the other countries in the Middle East and Asia increase there is less support for joining the European Union. In 2004 12.5% of Turkey's exports went to the Middle East, today this is up to 20%. This figure is expected to increase after the Arab Spring and new economic opportunities in the region, according to one business group leader. Turkey's exports to Europe in 2010 were about 56%. As Cyprus takes the rotating presidency of the European Union in July 2012, Turkey plans to boycott the presidency and freeze negotiations. In 1974 Turkey invaded Cyprus and set up a rival government in the Turkish part of Cyprus. The talks may be abandoned if no progress is made by 2014, according to Turkish officials. Turkish public opinion is also shifting away from favoring joining the EU. Surveys by the German Marshall Fund show 38% of Turks saw membership as a good thing in 2010, compared to 73% in 2004.

Biomass carbon removal at $100 per ton is being developed by Graphyte. The price for direct carbon removal from the air using huge fan like devices is $675 per ton. The price has to come down to about $100 per ton for it to become widely used. Graphyte is doing its first project near two timber milling and one rice milling operation in Pine Bluffs, Arkansas. American Airlines is purchasing credits from Graphyte. Graphyte can produce 150 pallets of blocks of biomass a day by July 2024 for carbon reduction of 50,000 tons per day. American Airlines is producing 35 million metric tons of direct emissions a year.
