It brings a repair worker into the home to figure out how to make it safer for falls, in addition to an occupational therapist and a nurse. Center for Disease Control and Prevention says these falls contribute to deaths of 41,000 older Americans each year and cost Medicare $50 billion. Yet this report in The Washington Post shows Medicare does not cover it, and most private insurance plans do not grasp the idea of keeping people healthy in good settings, paying only when people fall, doing little to prevent the falls. Sarah Szanton is a nurse practitioner who worked with older Americans in home settings in West Baltimore and started CAPABLE in 2009, and is now Dean of the John Hopkins University School of Nursing. In it the client and care team work together to do problem solving and brainstorming. One study shows $20,000 in savings a year for Medicare continuing for 2 years person after one CAPABLE intervention. ...

Venezuela's Maduro faces trial in the US and Judge Alvin Hellerstein 92 years old in the Southern District of New York is presiding over that case. There is no mandatory retirement age for judges which means they can be practicing well into their 90's. Aligning GM brands into 4 groups with one person in charge of marketing and sales for each group is one change, the other is to bring the brands in each group under one dealer roof. Senate Finance Committee chairman says Senate Democrats have found ways to reduce the cost of the health care plan from $1.6 trillion to $1 trillion. A tax on some employer provided health benefits, cuts in Medicare and Medicaid spending, employers helping to pay the cost of health insurance for low-income workers, and limiting the eligibility for subsidies to households with incomes at 3 times the poverty level or $66,150, instead of 4 times the poverty level. Also a reduction in the plan to give tax credits to small businesses to help them buy insurance. And expansion of Medicad would be delayed to 2013.

Unknowingly many people have ownership in gun manufacturers through their pension funds. Pension funds for public employees in Florida, Texas Wisconsin and Ohio have stakes of less than 1% in American Outdoor Brands, formerly Smith & Wesson, the manufacturer of AR-15 semiautomatic rifles used in mass shootings at schools and other locations. Even a reputed fund such as TIAA representing teachers has small stakes in this company, this report in the NYT shows. New Jersey is one of the states cutting out investments of state pension funds in gunmaker companies. New York state still has small positions in its teacher pension funds in these companies. AS this NYT report shows it is through the use of  broad stock indexes that pension funds end up owning these stocks even when they have not specifically picked out such stocks. Equally or more alarming as reported here is that funds such as Fidelity and Vanguard own large stakes in the gunmaker companies. Fidelity is reported as the top shareholder of Vista Outdoor, with 15% of the company, through actively managed funds.  Vanguard has a 9.5% stake in Sturm Roger, and a 8% stake in American Outdoor Brands. Black Rock and Capital Group also have stakes in gunmaker companies. This points to a larger culture problem in the U.S. as financial companies see this as " a social issue" whatever that is supposed to mean in the minds of investment managers, when it is really an everyday issue for parents and children. In a culture prevalent in parts of the country and American society that sees something as basic as guns in schools and other public areas as "social change" a spokesman for Vanguard can quietly say that "mutual funds are not optimal agents of social change," without arousing a response. ...

Verizon Communications takes a $4.5 billion charge in the 4th quarter of 2018 for its acquisition of AOL. Tim Armstrong, former head of AOL departs Verizon with incentive package of $60 million. The business headed by Armstrong at AOL was combined with Yahoo properties and called Verizon Media Group which failed to meet revenue projections. Verizon spent $9 billion from 2015-2017 to buy AOL and Yahoo, in an investment that has half its value written off.

Jeremy Corbyn was a euroskeptic calling the European Union a "banker's club." Most of his Labour Party's membership opposes Brexit. Experts say a substantial part of the Labour Party's parliamentary vote is needed for any Brexit deal to pass. So far only three members of the Labour Party have deviated from the party direction, and Labour remains united. Corbyn now has the choice to reverse his own skepticism of the EU, so that Labour has a shot at forming a new government to reverse years of Tory policies that Labour sees as neglecting workers.

Surat in India's state of Gujarat is the 14th of 15 cities in Guardian's Megacities series. Other cities from India are Kolkata, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Ahmedabad. This city is at the point where the Tapi river meets the Arabian sea and is prone to flooding. The city is spending about $400 million on projects including live tracking of buses, new water treatment plants, solar and biogas generation, automated LED street lights. Some of the funding comes from India's Smart City Initiative launched in 2015 for 100 cities.

Special Counsel Mueller's team says in a court filing that Paul Manafort, Mr. Trump's campaign manager should face a prison term of 19 to 24 years for "serious, longstanding, and bold" financial crimes.  Manafort also faces financial penalties totaling about $50 million, according to the filing. Some of the problems date to years before Manafort joined the Trump campaign as campaign chairman.
