Filled Bundesliga stadiums are a big problem, says DW.com Sports Editor, Sarah Wiertz. Germany faces a crisis with hospitalizations and in ICU's in November 2021. Borussia Dortmund stadium has lowest permitted capacity rate of all of 82%- this is still 67,000 spectators. She says this is not normality at last, it is absurd. Union Berlin applied for full capacity if it only admitted vaccinated and recovered spectators in the game against Hertha Berlin this week and got it approved. It is not good enough to say German Football League Association has 94% of its players, coaches and staff vaccinated.  With the alarming situation at German hospitals, many breakthrough infections, crowding in the stadiums is not responsible behaviour of Bundesliga clubs and fans. This is how the first wave hit Italy hard in 2020 March when soccer stadiums were filled to capacity, not a situation to be forgotten so quickly. ...

Fed chairman Jerome Powell gets Biden's support for another term as chairman of America's central bank. Powell is utterly different from previous Fed governors under previous administrations because of his concentration and clarity of mind that let him focus on the job of renewing America, after the missteps of previous governors and administrations. The WSJ says he is viewed by president Biden and by markets as a steady hand whose extensive, personal outreach helped restore bipartisan support for the central bank one decade after its reputation was badly hurt by the 2008 financial crisis.  People from both sides of the aisle in Congress and in markets see his personal outreach reflected in his understanding of the country and the needs of its people. Rep Emmanuel Cleaver, Democrat of Missouri says Powell visited  Missouri several years ago and talked to a cross section of rural Missourians and Kansas City residents. And everybody who met Powell thought he was frank, nothing partisan about him, as straight shooter. After what America went through during the financial crisis of 2008 and the utterly aloof and distant central bank governors of the last 3 decades Powell brings a needed quality for all who head America's central bank -a direct on the ground understanding of the needs of the people and the country. Senator John Kennedy, Republican of Louisiana says "You kept this thing in the middle of the road. Some days you had to do it with spit and happy thoughts but you kept this thing in the middle of the road." Powell's senior thesis at Princeton University was titled "South Africa- Forces for Change," and the years since then reflect a concern for the people, for families and working class Americans. Supporting Powell is Lael Brainard, Fed governor, who will be vice chairman. Brainard brings experience to tackle the regulation of banks that was missed under previous administrations.   ...

This WSJ Exclusive report shows 1.89 million breakthrough infection cases in the US and at least 72,000 hospitalizations, 20,000 deaths among fully vaccinated people in the US this year. The WSJ reviewed medical record data for 21 million fully vaccinated people, and an array of state reports to put together this analysis. The pandemic has worsened mental health and created the need to reflect on living a better healthier life. This means clarity, simplicity, and concentration so that one does not end up wasting one's energies in different directions. Focus on one or two tasks, what he calls deep focus work, play and connection. Experts say it is not true that there are sudden leaps in performance. Most work is diligently done each step preparing ne for the next step which eventually with patience and persevering on tasks brings results. They only appear to be sudden achievements, but always build on work done before patiently and step by step. This can be seen in the work of recent Nobel prize winners in science who have worked on a new discovery for decades with failures that were overcome, and obstacles that were surmounted with patient work day after day. Stolberg quotes St. Augustine and the Buddha on the importance of close knit groups, companionship and being part of a deep community. When Buddha's disciple Ananda says this is half of the spiritual life, Buddha says in response -  not so, this deep community is the whole spiritual life. Stolberg's new book is "The Practice of Groundedness." Much of this is also seen as important in the Bhagavad Gita and in Christianity- the ideas of simplicity and concentration in life on just one or two tasks, the clarity of mind that comes from this free of tensions.  The Cistercian monasteries all over Europe in the Middle Ages attest to this. One such abbey the restored Abbey of Fontenay in France, embodies this idea. Written about the restored abbey are the words- "The sun brings life to the austere bareness of Cistercian architecture, the way God's light spreads grace through the simplicity loving souls of the monks." ...

The drop in the value of the Turkish currency, the lira, hits ordinary Turks as it pushes up the price of food, medicine and other essentials. The lira has dropped by over a third of its value against the dollar in 2021. This is leading to a decline in living standards in Turkey, says this report in WSJ. President Erdogan is pushing an unconventional strategy to increase growth, by having the central bank cut interest rates as the value of lira drops sharply. This could lead to further drops in the lira making it difficult to make dollar debt repayments says this report in WSJ. The problem extends beyond drop in standard of living for average Turks. The country's banks are affected and companies that have borrowed heavily in US dollars and foreign currency denominated debt. A large mismatch between foreign currency debt such as dollar debt and the country's foreign exchange reserves has led to countries such as Argentina falling behind and seeking IMF assistance. WSJ points out that Turkey has about $160 billion in foreign exchange assets, and $280 billion in liabilities as of August 2021, according to the Turkish central bank. Bank lending in foreign currency is 24% to 45% of their total loans in the first half of 2021, according to Fitch Ratings. This could lead to dollar debt rollover difficulties as debt repayment comes due in April 2021. ...

Stranded assets is likely to become a major issue for automobile companies switching to electric vehicles, power companies switching away from coal, and oil and gas companies that are moving to renewables. Close to $20 trillion such assets now face writedowns, as shown in this report in the WSJ. These are assets that are retired early or assets that can no longer be used because of high carbon emissions and the switch to new technologies. A recent US Congressional session with oil company executives showed the heads of BP, Shell, Exxon, and Chevron, answering questions on how quickly they were preparing for the switch to renewable energy. The COP26 Glasgow conference has created new urgency at companies such as BP and Shell in Europe.

The US state of Nebraska has 69,000 job openings and only a third of that in persons looking for work. After Nebraska at 1.3%, the unemployment rate is lowest in Utah at 2.2%, and in Idaho, South Dakota, Oklahoma, all with unemployment rates of below 3%. A sign of how this mismatch between demand for workers and the supply is happening is the national "quits rate,"  a measure of workers leaving jobs as a share of total employment, which is at a record rate of 3%.

Of the $1 trillion in infrastructure package passed into law, $120 billion is for competitive grant programs, money going to states for specific projects. WSJ shows how $1.5 billion in grants for doing the planning for projects is spent concentrating resources on key priorities. Projects getting priority are for improving bicycle and pedestrian safety getting 18%, road projects getting 50%, transit 18%, maritime 8%. Projects favored will reduce carbon emissions, increase bicycle paths, reconnect neighborhoods left out in earlier highways built. They include projects in St Louis County, Missouri for walking around safely, new transit center in Charlotte, N.C., and improvements in streets, sidewalks and bicycle paths in parts of Manchester, New Hampshire. Pete Buttigieg, Transportation Secretary is leading this effort. He says this will "improve infrastructure, strengthen supply chains, make us safer, advance equity, and combat climate change." ...
