Canada is seen as a resource rich economy with stable supplies and a democracy firmly within the western alliance, that is also a key supplier of energy. Rockland and Orange counties in the New York City area have polio vaccination rates for eligible children as low as 60%, compared to a national rate of 93%. Decades of neglect of healthcare, and lack of investment in healthcare infrastructure and healthcare services, and in education for healthcare that was a major priority in the postwar years in the fifties and sixties have led to a situation where this is happening today. Vaccination rates are wholly inadequate and a 100% consensus that existed on key things such as vaccination needs to be recovered in the US, by changing the entire sense of priorities in society and the way it invests in its people.

Electric vehicles (EV's) get a tax credit under the Biden Climate Bill also called the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022. To qualify for the tax credit of upto $7500 buyers of EV's have to meet income and other requirements. Only cars with final assembly in the US qualify for the tax credit which should help boost American EV manufacturing capabilities and technology. This removes the problem of automobile job losses for factories shipped overseas.  EV's must not be priced above $25,000 for 2 year used cars, and $55,000 for new cars. SUV's can go upto $80,000. Income limits (as AGI) are $300,000 for joint filers, 150,000 for single filers for new cars. For old cars it is $150,000 for joint filers and $75,000 for single filers.

Young microworkers in Britain have doubled since 2016. They earn less than 4 pounds an hour says this editorial in The Guardian. Many of them are stressed and burnt out by the constant hunt for tasks. This is not just in Britain. More than half are in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh and this kind of work has boomed since the pandemic.

The need for earth friendly diets is shown in this editorial in The Guardian. Animal based products account for 57% of greenhouse gas emissions compared to 29% for food from plants. An outsize meat and dairy industry accounts for about 15% of the world's greenhouse gas emissions according to UN message in 2021. Mr. Dimpleby is Britain's food minister. He says a 30% reduction in meat eating would make it possible to have sustainable land use in Britain. The Guardian says high income countries are eating double the meat, poultry and fish products that they should be eating for living within the planetary sustainable living boundaries- that is to have no net environmental damage. Go back to the periods before 1600 and European, American, high income countries consumption of animal based foods was a fraction of what it is today.  A new legal regime is seen as a fair, just and sustainable living oriented solution. The Netherlands is doing just this to reduce the size of its large animal and dairy industry as a step towards more sustainable living and planet. It is not easy to convince farmers yet the public supports such a move. With the fires, floods and drought in Europe there is increasing awareness that action needs to be taken even where it is difficult.  ...

Nature recovery is seen as a better term than rewilding for letting nature take its own course on parts of the countryside to let the earth, aquifiers and underground water replenish itself. The head of Natural England, Tony Juniper, says the least productive land is better used for peat restoration or tree planting than for grazing animals. He argues for turning the 20% of the land that produces the least food into a "nature recovery area." He says he is not talking about putting huge parts of the countryside into natural recovery, just that in some parts it makes sense to let nature recover its natural functioning to rebuild the land and make it what it was in its original condition.

Claire Moses reports for the NYT from Woudenberg, Netherlands, her home country. The 1.6 million cows on Dutch dairy farms are a leading producer of nitrogen emissions in the country. EU and Netherlands laws limiting these emissions would require a much smaller population of cows. To meet the cuts in emissions Dutch dairy farmers will have to significantly reduce their farming operations and number of cows in each farm. Netherlands is a major dairy farming nation with 8.2 billion euros of dairy exports including Edam and Gouda cheeses and 13.8 billion kilos of milk.  Dutch farmers have launched nitrogen protests for 2 years saying their livelihood is threatened. In a nation of 17 million people about 40% supports the farmers, but this support is declining with increasing impact of droughts and fires, impact on agriculture and transportation on rivers, takes its toll on Europe and the rest of the world. Netherlands has set aside $25 billion to aid farmers making the transition to a smaller nitrogen footprint. It also requires the Dutch to shift their diet to fewer animal proteins, to grain and other non animal proteins. ...
