The British pound was trading at $1.50 just before voting to leave the EU in June 2016. Since then years of wrangling on Brexit led to uncertainty and the pound dropping to $1.22. The Gare du Nord rail station is Paris is Europe's busiest and the station where the Eurostar arrives from London. It is also one of the oldest stations and one that has deteriorated over the years. Gare du Nord rail station is overcrowded and set for handling 700,000 passengers daily by 2030. It is overdue for a renovation and rebuilding. The problem is that SNCF the rail company is planning to partner with the Auchan supermarket chain to get private financing to help with the rebuild effort. 

Doing this with a supermarket chain distorts the vision for the development with emphasis on more shops and food stores, turning the rail experience into one that one sees at overcrowded airports. The mayor of the district and the public have opposed this type of redevelopment and are calling for changes to be made.

China's ascent only began as recently  in 2010 under a state model that targeted particular industries as Taiwan and South Korea had done before. America's failure to protect its technology led to the situation today. Supreme Court Justice could simply have retired and let then president Obama appoint her successor. She decided to stay into her eighties. As a result president Trump will choose a conservative as her successor and has the votes lined up in the Senate. In Britain the retirement age was changed from lifetime to 75 by an Act in 1959. In India the Constitution set the retirement age for the Supreme Court at 65. Only in the U.S. is this practice maintained.

The succumbing ethical roles of Ivy League graduates is the topic of this article in the WSJ. The author says that deprived of good role models at Ivy League universities they are not as good material to become good leaders themselves than students of less well known schools and state universities. Eisenhower and Truman some of the country's most respected presidents in the 1940's and 1950's came from ordinary schools and struggled through jobs and long hours to provide the leadership the country required at the time. During the pandemic the country needs this kind of basics of leadership and character in its young people.

A former solicitor general questions the 4 page summary of Attorney General Barr as a misrepresentation of the findings of the Mueller investigation following the protest by Mr. Mueller himself that the findings were distorted in the summary. It defeated the very purpose of appointing the Special Counsel. It was upto Congress to come up with its conclusions according to how the U.S. constitutional process was intended to work on questions of national importance, and not the Attorney General appointed by the president. Neal Katyal helped draft the regulations about the way a special counsel is supposed to operate. He can show the findings on each matter whether the president is cleared or not cleared, bu it is Congress that has to make up its mind and come up to its own conclusions. That is Congress's role and not the Attorney General's role. By taking on Congress's role and drafting a 4 page report that exonerates the president Mr. Barr has violated the letter and the spirit of the regulations set for the Special Counsel's office. Mr. Katyal concludes this article saying -"There is no more sacred duty for Congress than gettting to the bottom of whether our president has taken care that the laws of this country have been faithfully executed." He says in drafting the special counsel office regulations he and others had thought of the possibility of there being "a nefarious Attorney General" though "we didn't predict this amount of duplicity."  The U.S. Congress now faces the challenge of getting to the bottom of the matter and drawing its own conclusions. Katyal questions polls showing that the public does not want further inquiry because he says the Attorney General has created confusion, misrepresented Mr. Mueller and delayed the release of the Mueller Report to the public.     ...

Relying too much on BP has put the Obama administration's reputation at risk. This is because BP underestimated the size of the problem from the beginning, made errors that caused the disastrous spillage, miscalculated the rate and size of the leak and denied the existence of underwater plumes. The different government agencies that were supposed to prevent the situation from spreading including the White House, Coast Guard, Army Corps of Engineers, Fish and Wildlife Service, and EPA were debating the approach for 3 weeks while neccessary action was either not taken or inadequate. Upto 90 miles of sand barriers needed to protect wetlands and shoreline were only grudgingly approved. Louisiana Governor asked for 23 berms , but only one berm was approved and further approval of berms took a long time.

Pamela Druckerman is the author of "Bringing Up Bebe: One American Mother Discovers the Wisdom of French Parenting," which describes her experiences in France and with French ways of child raising. Unlike Ms. Druckerman's book title, the title of this article is about why French parenting is superior, which is not really the point. The point being how Americans can learn from other ways of doing parenting that would make it easier, more effective and less stressful. Brigid Schulte in an article in the Washington Post reviewing Druckerman's observations, says an important reason why French parenting is more relaxed is the comprehensive system of child care in France. This is financed by the government and has wholehearted French support. By contrast the American system is chaotic in comparison with constant worry about finding good child care, leaving mothers with the difficult choice between careers and being stay at home mothers.
