Barcelona's football club is unique for several reasons and may support time tested ideas of good ways of managing an organization. It is unique because it is a source of Catalan pride- Catalan having suffered under the rule of General Franco. The Club is owned by its members, called socis in Catalan. There are 150,000 members. Management is responsible to 2500 randomly selected socis and 600 senior socis. Barca also has a boarding school, La Masia, where it brings up talented athletes from a young age, almost like a children's choir in European cathedrals. The boarding school stresses character building and values of team spirit, self-sacrifice, perseverance. Messi is a product of this school's training and support from a very young age. This special feeling of the Catalan spirit, of which Barca becomes the embodiment, makes the club something that may not be easily created elsewhere. Yet the Catalans may have learned some things about nurturing talent, character and team spirit that they have used to setup their unique arrangement. ...

In its May 2011 special report on international banking the Economist points out the need for banking regulators to take stronger action than they have so far. What it calls "pre-emptive insurance" it says is needed - stronger regulation, larger capital cushions, and some form of separation of different kinds of banking. Without this the dangers of excessive risk taking and banks that are "too big to fail" will continue to threaten the world's economy. Banks that are smaller and better capitalized says the Economist can fail more gracefully than the large mega banks that exist at this time. In fact the banks today in the U.S. are larger than at the time of the 2008 crisis. Other analysts also point to the lack of major changes in banking and financial structures today compared to the situation before the 2008 crisis, both in Europe and the U.S.

Syria borders Turkey, Israel, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon, placing it in a pivotal geographical location. Because of this unique geography what happens in Syria affects Turkey because of the Kurdish minority in Syria, it affects Lebanon because of Syrian support to Hezbollah, it affects Jordan because of demands for democracy there, and it affects Israel because of the Golan Heights. Meantime the Syrian democracy protests continue with the military crackdown by the Assad government, which has ruled Syria since Hafez Assad, an air force commander, took power in 1970. After his death power was passed on to his son, as has happened much too frequently in the Middle East, resulting in the stifling of any movement for change and participation in government. An added complication is that Assad comes from the minority Alawite sect in a largely Sunni country.

The northeastern region of Brazil, the poorest region of Brazil, has benefitted from the economic expansion in Brazil. The region's GDP went up by 4.2% a year for the last ten years compared to 3.6% for Brazil. Bolsa Familia, President Lula's anti-poverty programme has benefitted the northeast, but the Getulio Vargas research institute shows three quarters of growth coming from earnings and expansion of export based agriculture in soyabeans and other products and from mining export industries. Projects in the northeast include development of the port and industrial area around Suape. A petrochemical plant, a shipyard and a Petrobras refinery, are under construction. A new railway will link Suape to the interior. Much of the development is for export industries in soyabeans and iron ore, and for the rail and port infrastructure that supports these exports to China. As a result the development looks similiar to what is happening in Australia with the huge expansion in rail and port infrastructure in that country to support iron ore and other mining exports to China. Any slow down in China will affect Brazil as the IMF has recently warned, because of an overdependence on commodity exports to China. Alexandre Rands of local Datametrica consultancy points to this when he says that infrastructure booms while helpful are not enough to sustain development. Big firms train the workers they need which is how Brazilian companies cope with a weak educational system. Schools in the northeast are however not getting the financial support to improve education, a situation that affects Brazil as a whole, but is even more evident in the northeast....

The Economist points out (in this cover issue on India-Pakistan relations) several fundamental facts. The first is that the current state of relations betweeen India and Pakistan hurts Pakistan the most. It makes a much smaller country and smaller economy bear the burden of defense against a large neighbor- defense takes up much needed allocation of funds for infrastructure and development, education and healthcare. It also weakens democratic institutions and their development by an overdependence on the military for governance. Poor India-Pakistan relations have significant adverse effects on the U.S. In fighting the Taliban U.S. forces are fighting a force that Pakistan's military helped create and support from its early beginnings as a way to counter Indian influence. With an Indian-Pakistani peace settlement of issues in Kashmir and other outstanding issues the U.S. would be in a significantly better position to disengage from the region, especially when the entire Middle East is moving in a new direction in 2011. Consider the difficulties in establishing peace in Northern Ireland, and between Turkey and Greece, and the difficulties of establishing peace between India and Pakistan cannot be considered even more difficult. Pakistan and India muddle along- neither side is doing much to take the initiative. For the U.S. disengagement from South Asia can be best achieved by pushing for a settlement between the two countries. Pakistan and India have much to gain from a settlement. Considering the progress made in Ireland, such places as Yugoslavia, and in Turkish-Greek relations, there is a lot more that can be done and should be done to bring India and Pakistan together. In Ireland diplomatic efforts were made by U.S. envoy George Mitchell, and in Yugoslavia U.S. envoy Holbrooke made diplomatic efforts towards the Dayton accords. Greek-Turkish relations have advanced to the point where Erdogan and Papandreou, the Greek and Turkish prime ministers, discuss solutions to the Greek debt crisis. This includes options to reduce Greece's defense expenditures in the light of Turkey's new foreign policies. The lack of such efforts to break the deadlock between India and Pakistan by the U.S,. the U.K. and other countries involved in the NATO mission in Afghanistan, the emphasis on a military solution supported first by Gen. McChrystal, and then by by Gen. Petraeus, all show a lack of understanding of the real issues that need to be tackled- issues relating to a peace settlement between India and Pakistan....

Salzberg pays attention to tried and tested ideas and this adds to the value of what he has to say about managing and leadership. He emphasizes being prepared, being a little proactive and forward looking, thinking ahead. Its about being transparent and having people reporting to you being comfortable with being open and direct, sharing everything they know. He talks about the importance of being open to feedback, even as in his own personal experience when it takes effort, and takes some maturing to learn from what one hears and what people are saying. Questions he says that reveal more about a person are asking- was there something in the last few years that did not go well, why didn't it go well, and what did you do about it. In work his advice is cascade the things you learn through the organization by sharing it with others. Be yourself not what what someone wants you to be, find that thing which makes you unique, find ways to express this and make your contribution this way. And he says get out of your comfort zone to widen your horizons and see and experience new things. As Salzberg says these things were true in 1980 in his early years and are just as true today in 2011....

Efforts at Caltech and MIT to produce hydrogen based energy from light absorbing materials that combine sunlight and water vapor to emit hydrogen. Three innovation hubs have been set up by the U.S. Energy Department including the Joint Center for Artificial Photosynthesis at Caltech. The project has $122 million in funding from DOE. The research is especially applicable for a product that can be used to provide energy in developing countries - using existing resources and providing a small power station as it were for each home without the large energy needs of developed countries.

Putin writes to Gayne Young, a high school English teacher from Fredericksbug, Texas, who is a blogger for Outdoor Life. A lengthy interview with Putin is published in Outdoor Life. Putin talks about the period before the Second World War and the Cold War period and says a large number of barriers were unnaturally and artificially forced on the two peoples during this period. He says the two countries and peoples were cruelly kept apart from each other and only now has the relationship assumed a natural pattern where people can communicate and make friends. Young was captivated by an account of Putin's encounter with a blue whale in the summer of 2010. Young asked Putin whether he thought this was dangerous and Putin's response was philosphical and eloquent- human beings are one of the most vulnerable creatures on earth, facing disease, disaster and criminality, he says, as if covering the Russian people's experiences since the Bolshevik revolution right through the period that followed the collapse of the Berlin Wall. He adds that this does not mean one should move back from living life to the fullest, experiencing it to the fullest, which by its very nature is about some level of risk....
