Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola Mobility for $2.91 billion. After Google acquired Motorola Mobility, Lenovo's Mr Yang invited Mr. Schmidt of Google to dinner and told him Lenovo would be interested in acquiring the smartphone maker if Google decided it did not want to be in the hardware business. Google sees Lenovo as the company which can make smartphones at lower prices to reach a larger number of users. It also offsets the price rigidities in the market with Samsung controlling a large market share and reaping a larger share of the profits compared to other firms.

Shell's new CEO in 2014, Ben Van Beurden, says Shell needs to "sharpen its performance" after a decade of efforts to boost production and heavy spending on long term projects. Shell's 4th quarter 2013 earnings showed profit was 71% less than the prior year as spending surged. Cash flow was exceeded by spending on capital projects, acquisitions and dividends. He told a news conference profit was "too low" and spending too high. Big projects had in his view "convoluted" things for setting targets for cash flow and production. He says Shell will suspend plans to drill in the Arctic and will not drill in Alaska.

Countries which ignored the lessons of the 1997 financial crisis are affected to a larger degree in the 2014 emerging markets financial crisis- Argentina, Turkey and Thailand have high government gross debt as a percentage of GDP. Investors are taking a careful look at individual countries this time and there is less contagon. Flexible exchange rates, and higher foreign exchange reserves are reducing the effects in 2014. U.S. GDP growth was 3.2% for 4th quarter 2013, according to the Commerce Department. Excluding inventory growth the GDP growth was 2.8% for the 4th quarter of 2013. The U.S. economy expanded by 2.7% for all of 2013. For the second half of 2013 the economy expanded at 3.7% compared to 1.8% in the first half. Consumer spending and business spending increases offset declines in government spending and in the housing sector. Stronger exports supported the recovery.

Lenovo's acquisition of Motorola Mobility from Google for $2.91 billion in January 2014. Google paid $12.5 billion for Motorola Mobility in 2011. The Moto X model has not sold well in competition with Apple and Samsung smartphones. Google will retain 15,000 of 17,000 patents acquired as part of the Motorola acquisition, patents worth billions of dollars and helping it defend its Android mobile operating system. Google sold Motorola Home which made setup boxes to Arris in 2012 for $2.35 billion. Motorola Mobility had $2.9 billion in cash at the time of the acquisition. In addition Google is retaining a research group led by Regina Dugan working on new technologies.
