Chief Minister Jayalalitha in the State of Tamilnadu, India, and the conviction for corruption in 2014

A Supreme Court ruling prevents a politician from serving in office if convicted on corruption charges even if it is appealed, and bars the person from public office for 10 years. The ruling was intended to prevent Indian politicians to use their office to delay consequences of corruption convictions seemingly forever. Jayalalitha in Tamilnadu state with the capital Madras (Chennai), is the first convicted chief minister where this ruling is applied. Corruption is endemic in public life in India, slowing the growth rate and reducing opportunities for business growth.
