It also rejects the so called neo liberal thinking and culture that has become entrenched in France, in Europe and in the US where infrastructure is failing, public services are failing yet the wealthiest are not paying their fair share in taxes so that the countries of Europe and America can be rebuilt and renewed, to provide a better life for all.

Ukraine modifies the proposals and Russia insists on territorial concessions. A report in Germany's DW.com from Ukraine calls this "absurd." A new element emerges in this conflict in December 2025 when one sees this in the context of European history where such struggles between European powers happened repeatedly since 1500, with some of them in the period after 1700 involving Russia, Sweden, Denmark, Britain, France, Spain, Prussia and rest of Germany split into many states. That pattern has relevance today because when one power whether France, Austria-Hungary or Russia became dominant the other European powers acted together to keep the balance in Europe.  ...

This NYT report looks at the last minute negotiations on the day the trial was to begin that led to the FNN television network working out a deal with Dominion.It says in a conference room down the hall from Judge Eric Davis's courtroom in downtown Wilmington, Delaware, were the head of Dominion, John Poulos, and the top investor in Dominion, State Street Capital co-founder Hootan Yaghhoobzadeh. In a call from Los Angeles was Viet Dinh, chief legal officer, close to Rupert and Lachlan Murdoch. Also calling in was a mediator who knew both sides, Jerry Roscoe, a veteran of wartime negotiations in the Balkans on a Danube river cruise with his wife. Roscoe says he had two things working for him- the about to begin opening statements of Dominion ("lies have consequences,") and the finalization of the jury selection (12 jurors presenting much uncertainty for Dominion) that had given pause to both sides. That Viet Dinh's hardline was just that an appearance, was Fox head Lachlan's earlier decision unknown to each side to raise the money needed for a larger settlement close to $787 million the company actually paid. It suggests that Fox heads Lachlan and Murdoch really wanted to settle in the final moments using as skilled a mediator as Jerry Roscoe . FNN television network also owned the WSJ, and WSJ had independently supported the 2020 election results from the beginning, as WSJ pointed out in its editorial this week. Murdoch's own position being ambivalent about his positions, never quite convinced what was the right thing to do whether his own judgement was dependable. FNN was simply following the practice of creating controversy to increase circulation, a practice going back to the Melbourne Herald in the 1920's when competing with papers from Sydney, under Keith Murdoch. Setting the early twentieth century origins of News Corporation, parent of FNN, following  the practices of increasing news circulation by pursuing controversy of British newspaper businessmen Beaverbrook and Northcliffe through the prewar period in the 1920's to the 1950's. Jetten says he had noticed during the election campaign that voters liked his positive approach to “say goodbye to the Wilders era and truly seek the cooperation to move the country forward.” The Wilders era with participation of the Freedom party in Dutch government 2023-2025 led to much infighting in the Dutch government leading to neglect of major issues such as housing shortages and cost of living.    ...

US president Biden and EU president Leyen are expected to discuss a plan to reduce dependence on China for minerals for EV vehicles. A buyers club for critical minerals is part of an effort to move clean energy supply chains away from China. The G-7 would then arrange for agreements in Africa, Asia and Latin America to buy these critical minerals. EU firms would be able to use this supply to qualify for incentives provided under the Inflation Reduction Act. Some Senators including Manchin say the provision for US sourced materials for EV vehicles manufacturing was intended to support manufacturing in the US. The EU protested and president Biden is working out an arrangement to work with the EU on a common manufacturing platform that also gives incentives to EU made products under the Inflation Reduction Act.

Researchers at Kyoto University and Hokkaido University present their analysis at the advisory panel to the Health Ministry in Japan on the Delta variant on June 23. The research by Prof. Hiroshi and Prof. Kimihito shows the Delta variant from India is 1.95 times more transmissible than the original virus.

The group of researchers examined PCR tests from Japan and an international database for their analysis. Based on data from Japan the researchers looked at the Delta variant is projected to account for more than half of new cases in Japan by July 12. By the time the Tokyo Olympics open on July 23 this variant is projected to account for 69% of new cases.  The researchers say the recent lifting of the emergency restrictions in Tokyo and other cities as well as the high transmissibility of the new variant is likely to increase risks from infections in future.

David Kellerman, the CFO of Freddie Mac, committed suicide by hanging himself. He leaves a five year old daughter Grace, and his wife. He was 41, and had joined Freddie Mac 16 years earlier. The news shocked the neighborhood in northern Virginia where he lives. He had lost a noticeable amount of weight under the stress, and federal regulators were conducting an investigation into Freddie's accounting practices.

Her inventive skills, networking and collaboration with other parts of Toshiba, hard work and perseverance paid off when her team solved the problem of being able to view the 3-D television without glasses. The solution was a new algorithm based on Toshiba processer Cell that sent different images to the left and right eyes. Here she describes the astonishment with which her team received the news that a woman was in charge of the team, just returning from maternity leave, and only 39! Was it tough as a woman? Yes, she says! Rieko was exceptional in many ways. Japan's challenge is to get more women with even a fraction of Rieko's talent to make a huge difference in a country where women play a minor role in positions of responsibility and initiative at all levels. It would make a large difference in Japan's prospects in the global economy- about 8.2 million more workers, and an estimated 15% increase in GNP....

This story in the NYT showing America's GE building a wind turbine three times as large as the Statue of Liberty in New York harbour, comes after a decade of bad news from GE, beginning with its role in the mortgage financial crisis when its stock dropped to new lows. Bad bets on conventional power generation in its power division are leading to the change at GE where it is now investing in renewable energy. Under CEO Immelt GE did not anticipate the surge in growth of renewable energy powered by government subsidies. Now GE is pursuing an aggressive strategy by building larger wind turbines than its competitors Vestas in Denmark and Senvion in Germany. A 12 megawatt turbine is planned by GE called Haliade-X, to be built at a cost of $400 million for demonstration in 2019, shipping units in 2021. Competitors are looking at building a 10 megawatt wind turbine. Vestas SA and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries have a 9.5 megawatt wind turbine in operation as prototype in Denmark. The bit of good news comes with the backdrop of big changes at GE as its power division falters badly. GE under Immelt badly misjudged the market for gas and coal turbines, building inventory and resorting to aggressive pricing, not anticipating the push evident in Germany and in China towards renewable energy. The shift to renewable energy reduced demand for conventional power in Germany and the U.S. In Germany. Electric companies in conventional power generation are struggling. At GE orders declined by 25% and profits by 50% in the 4th quarter over the prior year. 12,000 job cuts are planned in the power division, 18% of its workforce. Older board members at GE are expected to leave, and GE under new CEO/Chairman John Flannery plans to shed $20 billion in assets in a major restructuring and shift to renewables.   Larger wind turbines of 10 megawatts or larger are the next stage in wind energy as the Netherlands and Germany move to build wind farms free of subsidies. The economics of larger wind turbines are critical as less geographic acreage is needed with larger turbines. ...

Under a new law going into effect on Oct. 1, 2017 and supported by Angela Merkel's government, all social networks will be required to delete within 24 hours "all illegal content." This is an effort to take immediate action against hate speech, libel and other illegal content. Companies could be fined upto $57 million. Germany's Justice Minister Heiko Maas said "we cannot accept that social networks ignore our laws." Mr. Maas says the voluntary effort setup earlier had not worked as the social media companies were too slow. The law now means the networks will devote more resources, with Facebook increasing the staff for this purpose doubling it almost from 4500 to 7500, showing that the problem had not been addressed the way it needed to be. The new law details 22 sections of the criminal code that social networks need to enforce. Including laws banning libel, character defamation, hate speech, insults against religions, offensive statements and privacy violations. Britain's May and France's Macron have also called the efforts of the networks insufficient. A similar law in the U.S. before the 2016 election could have saved the country from many of the problems arising from illegal content being posted, including damage to the image of the U.S., inciting deep divisions, racial tensions, hate rhetoric and defamation leading to coarsening of public dialogue and debate.  During 2016 many European leaders were exposed to hate speech including Angela Merkel. The social networks were slow to respond and did not take their civic duty as seriously as they should have considering the grave damage to the social and political fabric of the U.S. and the European Union countries. The governments also took time to act, studying the problem carefully before taking action leading to further damage, one reason the current legislation was passed quickly and decisively. Experts say other countries will act following the German example to preserve civil dialogue and strengthen democracy. ...
