China Merchant Port Holdings takes a 70% stake in the Hambantota Port project, in an agreement with Sri Lanka Ports Authority. It will handle the commercial operations of the port under a 99 year lease. This is part of the plan to convert the $6 billion Sri Lanka owes to China into equity. Hambantota port has losses of $300 million since 2011. China plans to invest $600 million to develop the port. The port project is a $1.12 billion lease to China. Sri Lanka's ports minister says the port will not be a military base for any country and will operate under Sri Lankan law. China is making the investment as part of its One Belt, One Road Initiative, which has aroused concern in Japan, India and Australia.

And BBC News report Live goes on to say that the picture of Xi planting tress gives out the vibe that - go on America "this is China, we are not interested in your crap."

About 90% of the 3.2% rise in inflation in July comes from shelter or housing costs. A letter from the US Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco this week shows the shelter costs are going down steeply in coming months down to where they may be a tiny fraction or even negative contribution to inflation. This is good news for the US Federal Reserve in its fight against inflation and may even lead it to a pause in inflation fighting rate increases.

India's Ministry of Finance predicts GDP growth of between 7 and 7.5% for 2018-2019, after faltering GDP growth in 2017-2018 following action on demonetization and introduction of a national Goods and Service Tax. The IMF predicts growth of 7.4% for India in 2018 compared to 6.8% in China in 2018, with growth of 7.8% predicted for India in 2019. Humor about how BMW and Mercedes completely missed the nature of this economic downturn in their forecasts, of continuing upbeat sales forecasts till about a month ago even though a lot of bad news has been coming in for some time. Is something like this happening in the Chinese economy, where things have been going strong for so long that forecasts have been toned down to 9% for GDP growth, even though car sales are flat for recent months and are expected to be flat or declining for 2009. If there is a decline in sales next year in auto sales is it possible that 9% GDP growth may be too optimistic for 2009. Would it somehwhere in the range of 6-9%?
