Astoundingly in America 90 percent of people support universal background checks, yet private party sellers are not required to conduct background checks when selling guns. According to a Pew Research Center poll 67 percent of people support a ban on selling assault weapons to civilians, yet no such ban exists. It has taken this long just for president Trump to come out in favor of background checks. Ironically mass shootings have led to higher stock prices for gun manufacturers such as Smith and Wesson, as DW.com points out.  The National Rifle Association, NRA, has five million members and it lobbies hard to prevent gun control measures being passed in Congress. Members of Congress are even rated A to F based on their support for the NRA. Today an estimated 42% of Americans own guns, with 265 million guns in private hands. The NRA sees gun owning rights as part of the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, believing that the right to bear arms is a basic right supported by the Constitution. The NRA over many decades has shown no flexibility in its stance and fierce lobbying has brought down every gun control measure introduced. ...

Temp hiring is seeing a slowdown in Aug-Sept 2012. It declined by 2000 jobs in Sept and made no gains in August. By contrast in the first 6 months about 21,000 temp jobs were added each month. The historical correlation since 1990 of changes in temp employment with ensuing job growth in the next 3 months is 77%. This indicates job growth in the fourth quarter of 2012 will be about 72,000 jobs a month says Irwin, not enough to keep up with population growth, and likely to lead to an uptick in the unemployment rate. The value of newspapers has plummeted in recent years as newspapers lost advertising revenue and readership declined. The Washington Post was sold to Jeff Bezos of Amazon.com for $250 million, with readership having declined to about 457,000 in 2013. Philadelphia newspapers were sold for $55 millon in 2012, after being acquired for $515 millon in 2006, having lost about 90% of the value in just 6 years. In Oct. 2012 The Tampa Tribune sold for only $9.5 million. Estimates for the newspaper properties of the Tribune Company are about $623 million, according to analysts. This includes The Los Angeles Times and The Chicago Tribune.

Ahmadinejad says at a news conference in New York that he opposed the decision by Iran's central bank to allow the currency, the rial, to drop by about 60% against the dollar in the first 9 months of 2012. This opinion by Andres Oppenheimer in Miami Herald Jan 30, 2025, welcomes Rubio's visit to Latin America starting with central American countries in the coming weeks, but says it should have a message to help these countries cope with economic crises. This would be also a way to discourage migration by reducing both the mismanagement of the economy, and gang crime with economic assistance and help in managing the economy.  The Miami Herald says the last time the US paid attention to the southern part of the American continent was in 1912. Yet it was in 1960 during the debates with Nixon that JFK asserted the importance of Latin American relations. In 1961 JFK launched the Allianza de Progreso.  Sixty four years later the page on the, Alliance for Progress in the JFK Library site says it was a failure. LBJ, Nixon, Reagan, Clinton, Obama Biden lost interest in Latin America. It blames the elites in Latin America and American business that showed little interest. Yet compared to 1960 a lot of progress has been made. Brazil the largest is now a more stable and growing economy, Mexico has grown and struggles with the drug trade, Argentina is still struggling with inflation. Only in Central America and Venezuela is the situation dire. Much of it from gangs and drug trade that has destabilized small countries. Venezuela was torn up because of a lack of national consciousness to bring all parties together for the common good using tested approaches to development- instead embarking on a novel socialist experiment with disastrous results for both Venezuela and the entire American continent.  ...

Over 1 million people have contributed to the Guardian in the last 3 years. Of this 500,000 are paying to support the Guardian on an ongoing basis. This covers its Donate effort and its Memberships program. Katharine Viner, the editor-in-chief of Guardian News and Media called the business model a new way for journalism to "regain its relevance, meaning and trusted place in society." She says many contributors donate specifically because they wanted the Guardian to stay free and outside a paywall. When readers come to know of the challenging commercial reality facing all news organization they express real interest in wanting to support, she said. The other approach is through $6 a month Supporter memberships. Guardian has two thrusts in its coverage. In an age of filter bubbles and hyper-partisan politics  it says its important to make space for different ides and diverse opinions. It has a Cities section for instance and looks at climate change impact. Since taking over Italy's right wing Northern League Party in 2013, Matteo Salvini, 44 years old, has improved the party's appeal by appealing to parts of Italy's north beyond its base in Lombardy, Piedmont and Veneto. Of ten countries from which India gets oil Russia is at No.9 just before Brazil at No.10, a is shown in this Reality Check on BBC News. India gets only less than 2% of its oil from Russia. Most of it comes from Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Middle East countries. In January and February India did not import oil from Russia and in March oil was imported at about 30% discount. By comparison Europe still gets 15% of its oil from Russia and this is not likely to change in the next couple of months says S. Jaishankar, India's Foreign Minister.

Reports from Europe that a V shaped recovery is happening in the economy. Andy Haldane the chief economist of the Bank of England says roughly half of the 25% lost output in the economy in the lockdown in April and May has been gained back in UK. This is good news for Europe after the bad hit it took from the pandemic since March. The reopening of the economy in Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Britain is taking place with greater reassurance as the curve is flattening out at low levels of cases in July and people are generally following rules for prevention.
