The unemployment rate declines to 7.8% from 8.1% based on the Labor Department's survey of households. The larger and more reliable survey of businesses of the Labor Department shows 104,000 jobs added in the private sector and a revision of July and August jobs estimates to show 86,000 additional jobs created. About 150,000 jobs a month are needed just to keep up with population growth. Most of the 104,000 jobs added by the private sector in the larger survey of businesses were in health care, fewer public sector jobs were lost. However the survey shows 16,000 jobs lost in manufacturing which means there are problems in manufacturing which creates higher wage jobs and benefits relative to other sectors and which is a vitally important sector.

RIM's two co-CEO's, Jim Balsillie, and Mike Lazaridis, both resign. The board appoints Thorsten Heins, chief operating officer, to be the next CEO of Research In Motion on Jan. 22, 2012. Donald Keene, began teaching Japanese literature at Columbia University in 1955. He has lectured on Japan at Columbia for 56 years! Prof. Keene, 88 years old, taught the final session of a graduate seminar on traditional Japanese Noh plays on April 26, 2011. He started as a freshman at Columbia in 1938 and went on to complete graduate studies at Columbia in Japanese. In his early years he was hooked on Japanese literature after reading the Tale of Genji in 49 cent paperback volumes. During the last session of the seminar he quoted the final lines in "Matsukaze," a play by Japanese writer Kanami. That line says- "all that is left is the wind in the pines."

Only 61% of shareholders present at the annual general meeting voted in approval of the management at Deutsche Bank in May 2015. Legal settlements and lack of trust in strategies of management have hurt credibility. A large part of the lack of credibility comes from the culture at Deutsche Bank which is seen as slow to change. Co-CEO Jain was head of the investment bank when traders engaged in activities that are causing large legal settlements for wrongdoing. Strong criticism came at the annual meeting from shareholders. Han-Martin Buhlmann of the shareholder association VIP raised the question: "Mr. Jain, are you the solution to the problem or part of it?" Alison Esse, managing director of change consultancy, The Storytellers, says shareholders had voted no-confidence against senior management because they lack the credibility to restore the reputation of the bank.

The Australian and British newspapers do not generate much profit and The Sun has seen years of losses. These newspapers gave Murdoch his start in Australia and UK, but have built up losses today.

The conflicting set of priorities sometimes unrealistic are leading to a lack of clear direction for the BBC. Internationally BBC and BBC News are viewed as a key information provider with a long history. This role conflicts with the idea of the BBC as a competitor of Netflix and Amazon for serials and other shows such as "The Crown" done by Netflix.  The Boris Johnson government supports BBC's international role. The role of competing with private firms like Netflix is unrealistic because the revenue stream is different. There is also the concern about the BBC News failing to properly reflect Leave voters. Boris Johnson has himself found the local BBC News presenting a very different picture. In the end the new head of the BBC was chosen from Tory circles and with the idea of not doing much. The priorities of tackling post Brexit Britain  the pandemic, the economy, the northeast of England lagging behind, infrastructure building, remain much larger for Boris Johnson. BBC will have to wait for now. ...

Modi's BJP party gains 7.5 percentage points going from 38.3 percentage points of the vote in Delhi state to 48.8, and the ruling AAP party losing 10 percentage points going from 53.8 percentage points to 43.8 percentage points.

According to ComScore the Yahoo internet site had 618 million unique desktop visitors globally in October 2015, compared to Facebook's 863 million. But for Yahoo this traffic is not yielding much in terms of revenue and profit. Yahoo's lack of quality content to command premium pricing means a continual decline in ad revenues. Analysts point to the lower quality of traffic on the Yahoo site, fewer direct searches on its site relative to clicks on ads, and aspects of its collaboration with Bing and Google, as serious problems. Compared to Google News, Yahoo News is chaotic and likely to draw less quality traffic, with the addition of Kate Couric and other commentary not having much impact on the gradual deterioration of the site. Facebook is dominant in mobile with $3.4 billion in revenue in the third quarter of 2015, compared to $271 million for Yahoo. As a result Yahoo's internet site based on its current share price in Dec. 2015 shows a small or insignificant valuation considering the level of traffic. ...

Spanish footballer Rodri Fernandez is one of those rare players for his humility and simple living. He studied business and economics at university while playing at Villa Real and stayed in dorm accomodation so as not to miss a class. He does not use social media as he says he does not need friends on the internet. He drove a second hand Vauxhall Corsa that he bought from an elderly lady, a car was simply a way to get from A to B. Goldman Sachs Group is in negotiations with the U.S. government to admit responsibility for its role in the 1MDB corruption scandal in Malaysia and pay a $2 billion fine. The WSJ reports that Goldman raised $6.5 billion for 1MDB, or 1Malaysia Development BhD. Money raised was intended to be used for development and infrastructure in Malaysia. WSJ points out that it was misused by Malaysian government advisors under the government of Mr. Najib Razak, and 2 Goldman bankers. Goldman pursued $600 million in fees and ignored red flags that this misuse of funds was happening. Malaysia's newly elected government of Mr. Mahathir Mohammed is trying to clear up the mess of the previous government of Mr. Najib Razak, and has charged Goldman in a separate criminal investigation including 17 former and current employees of Goldman offices in Asia. Mr. Mahathir Mohammed came to power on an anti-corruption platform. The WSJ was the first to look into problems at the development fund, which it has continued to do for many years, helping Malaysia redirect development finances for growth. ...
