The work of Judge Sergio Moro, and prosecutors led by Deltan Dallagnol, to strengthen the legal system in Brazil for tackling corruption

04/07/2015

The story of the Petrobras investigation in Brazil is the result of the hard work put in by six prosecutors in the Brazilian city of Curitiba. Their hope is to bring some aspects of the U.S. legal system to Brazil to reduce the level of corruption. It comes at a time when there is a greater awareness in Brazil- and in many developing countries such as Brazil, Nigeria and others- of the cost of waste of public funds. In Brazil essential services including transportation have suffered for lack of funds, leading to public protests. A huge amount of borrowing took place in the last 10 years resulting in a debt crisis and credit crunch in the country which is likely to lead to low or stagnant growth.

Inadequate supplies of organic food in 2015 with surging demand and greater involvement of buyers in supporting farming to increase supplies

04/04/2015

Organic food such as corn and soyabeans can fetch prices as high as 3 times the regular price. During the transition period of 2-3 years for converting to organic farming growers still get paid the regular price even as they incur the high upfront costs of conversion. Organic farming also includes higher costs for farming practices such as weeding. This discourages conversion and requires support form buyers or direct involvement of buyers in setting up organic farms.
