Abigail Johnson brings a different style of management to Fidelity. Her father who built the company from $5 billion in assets to $2 trillion, was known to take risks to build the company. "Ned" Johnson built the company with actively managed mutual funds, giving investors the opportunity to invest in other company managed funds, and invested in technology with its first website in 1995. Abigail is more cautious and prone to studying the situation carefully. Father and daughter disagree on ways to manage the company. Abigail preferred to partner with more established Black Rock for ETF's than to do on its own. Abigail is confident that actively managed mutual funds will do well once the market improves, even though passivel managed funds are growing rapidly at the expense of actively managed funds for the last ten years.

The story of the Petrobras investigation in Brazil is the result of the hard work put in by six prosecutors in the Brazilian city of Curitiba. Their hope is to bring some aspects of the U.S. legal system to Brazil to reduce the level of corruption. It comes at a time when there is a greater awareness in Brazil- and in many developing countries such as Brazil, Nigeria and others- of the cost of waste of public funds. In Brazil essential services including transportation have suffered for lack of funds, leading to public protests. A huge amount of borrowing took place in the last 10 years resulting in a debt crisis and credit crunch in the country which is likely to lead to low or stagnant growth.

Fed Must Consider the World and All U.S. Employment
Wall Street Journal 04/09/15
Banks in the U.S. have reduced mortgage lending and other loans to business with mutual funds and private equity funds increasing their share of financing in the U.S. financial system. This comes after tighter regulation of banks in the U.S., as banks reduce their assets and deverage. This is also happening in europe. The IMF points out the risks in the shadow banking system that is not regulated the way banks are. Greg Ip of the WSJ points out that this creates risk of the banks being safer and the financial system becoming less safe. Paul Tucker, a deputy governor of the Bank of England, says financial institutions are constantly looking for areas that are less regulated, and even if they try hard financial system regulators risk failing to catch up at some point.

The College and University Food Bank Alliance has 183 members. With increases in tution of about 25% at U.S. universities and colleges since 2007, more students from low income households are having to reduce meals or use a food bank. About 40% of students in the UC system are from households with incomes less than $50,000 in 2015. Wage stagnation in the U.S. as food costs increase is also leading to more students having full tution aid depending on supplemental ways of meeting food costs. This is affecting the ability of students to study leading the UC system head, Janet Napolitano, to get a a study on food hunger.

Amit Singh of Google for Work: A Respectful Clash of Ideas
New York Times 01/22/16
We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
