Dr. Charles Link a researcher at the National Cancer Center in Maryland, says he decided to go back to his roots in Iowa in the 1990's to raise his children in the U.S. midwest. He did cancer research at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, and founded NewLink Genetics in 1999 to develop drugs based on his research on immunotherapy, using the body's immune system to fight cancer. Genentech has invested $150 million in the company. NewLink went public in 2011.
