The June 2015 proposals provide EU concessions on public sector worker reduction, and the surplus targets for 2015-2017, in an effort to reach a settlement. French president Hollande and German chancellor Merkel worked together to come up with a deal for Greece. Greece will have to make some cuts in the middle of a deep downturn, and continue reforms, but the plan takes into account the current situation by setting lower surplus targets and giving Greece more time to correct its finances.

Public pension funds in the U.S. have over 70% invested in stocks, and expect returns of close to 8% or higher, even though experts say a return of 5.9% is what can be expected for a portfolio of 70% stocks, 30% bonds for the next 10 years. Most public pension funds do not see the required contributions made each year, building up problems for the future.

Senator Rand Paul's position on NSA bulk data surveillance and on the Patriot Act, ensure that the surveillance activities and the Patriot Act which expire in May 2015, have no chance of being renewed in the U.S. Senate. Senator Paul made this a central part of his presidential campaign. It splits Republicans on this issue and ensures expiry of the Patriot Act.

The fight between proponents of the government retaining authority for bulk surveillance of data led by Majority House leader Mitch McConnell and the supporters of the USA Freedom Act led by U.S. Senators Mike Lee and Patrick Leahy who required court approval for looking into content of emails, ends with the passage of the Freedom Act. The Senate passed the legislation 67 to 32. It had earlier cleared the House with the support of Speaker Boehner. The bill created factions within both parties, included a separate faction supporting Rand Paul who fought hard to have the surveillance ended. A factor in the debate was that no terrorist attack has been prevented by bulk surveillance of phone data in the last decade, and that other means could be used say proponents of ending bulk surveillance to reduce terrorist threats. Rand Paul went so far as to say some Republicans had taken positions for intervening in conflicts that increased terrorism threats to the U.S. This is the first time in years that such a robust debate has taken place on preserving civil liberties from surveillance, which itself is a healthy sign.

Saudi Arabia acting as a swing producer adjusted oil production to keep prices from falling in the period before 2015. Following the sharp drop in oil prices to below $50 in early 2015, prices steadied to about $65 for Brent crude in June 2015. The Saudi oil minister Naimi says he takes the long view on oil prices, and decides to continue Saudi production at earlier levels in June 2015. In a period of declining oil prices the Saudis and OPEC continue to produce oil at the same levels as before.

China has by one estimate one third of the world's smokers. About 20% of the population in Beijing are smokers and the effects of second hand smoke are evident everywhere. The damage to public health is great and the authorites are aware of the need to step up the campaign to reduce smoking. The campaign has come late and is just beginning. The cost of being a laggard in this critical area of public health is immense and not fully understood.

King Salman promoted development in Diriyah, the capital of the Saudi state to which it traces its origins, when he was governor of Riyadh province. The first Saudi state had its origins here in the 18th century, till its overthrow by the Ottomans. Sheikh Wahhab promoted a form of Islam which removed worship of saints and saint relics, to return to the Islam of the early days. Committment to Sheikh Wahhab and his philosophy helped the Saud family unite the Arabian peninsula. With the help of U.S. president FDR the new Saudi state was established in 1932 binging Ibn Saud, the father of King Salman to the monarchy. King Salman visits Diriyah on weekends and plans to build a museum complex and park in Diriyah dedicated to Sheikh Wahhab.

We took a different way to help millions around the world build educated informed mindsets that affects and shapes their lives. For a future that is open, global and digital, with everyone having access to high quality information. We believe in the renewal of America, renewal of Europe, the renewal of India, the rest of Asia, Latin America and Africa. The renewal of our supply chains, health, education, infrastructure, as we rebuild our countries after the pandemic. Literacy and knowledge we believe cannot thrive and grow in a world of web bots, web crawlers, or AI. This requires human curiosity, human learning, and human imagination. We take as inspiration the saying- “One has to be free, and as broad as sky. One has to have a mind that is crystal clear, only then can truth shine in it.” Every contribution whether big or small is precious- in this crisis and ahead.
